我1992年来到哈佛求学

大二期间突然顿悟了

我意识到我身处让人神往大学校园

周围都是出色的同学优秀的导师

我成绩优异

除了一点

Exceptforthefact.

我不快乐

ThatIwasunhappy.而且我不明白为什么

AndIdidn'tunderstandwhy.

也就是在那时

Itwastheninamatterofmoments,

我决定要找出原因变得快乐

thatIdecidedthatIhadtofindoutwhyandbecomehappier.

于是我将研究方向

AndthatwaswhenIswitchedmyconcentration从计算机科学转向了哲学及心理系

fromcomputersciencetophilosophyandpsychology目标只有一个

withasinglequestion:

如何变得更快乐?

howcanIbecomehappier?

渐渐地我的确变得更快乐了

OvertimeIdidbecomehappier.

主要因为我接触了一个新的领域

WhatcontributedmosttomyhappinesswaswhenIencounteredanewemergingfield那时并未正式命名

thatatthattimedidn'thavethenamethatithastoday.

但本质上属于积极心理学范畴

Butessentiallyresearchthatfallsunderorwithinthefieldof

positivepsychology.

研究积极心理学

Positivepsychology,studyingit,

把其理念应用到生活中让我无比快乐

applyingtheideastomylifehasmademesignificantlyhappier.

而且这种快乐继续着

于是我决定将其与更多的人分享

我第一次开设这门课程是在2002年

WhenIfirsttaughtthisclassthatwasbackin2002,

是以讨论会的形式只有8名学生

两名退出了

只剩我和其他六个人

一年后

Theyearafter,学生稍微多了一点

theclassbecameslightlylarger.

有300多人参加

Ihadoverthreehundredstudents.

到了第三年也就是上一次开课

AndthenthirdyearwhenItaughtitwhichwasthelasttime,

有850人参加

Ihad850studentsintheclass,是当时哈佛人数最多的课程

这引起了媒体的关注

因为他们想知道为什么

于是我被请去参加各类媒体采访

报纸广播电视

从这些采访中我发现了一种有趣的模式

下一次采访结束时仍是如此

因为采访中我容易紧张

差不多有几十次采访

每次都是"好交际更开朗"

Moreoutgoing,morecheerful.

"不含蓄更外向"

Lessintroverted,moreextroverted.

诸如此类

最绝的一次

是波士顿一家地方台

SothisisoneofthelocalchannelsherearoundBoston.

我去参加采访

Iwasgoingtotheinterview.

聊了很多

Wehadaquitelonginterview,

我觉得进行得不错

whichIthoughtwasactuallyprettygood.

采访结束

Andattheendoftheinterview,

主持人是个热情开朗的男生

theinterviewerisaveryjollyguy.

他送我出门拍着我的肩说

"多谢接受我们采访"

"不过Tal你跟我想象得不太一样"

我问

那时候我已经完全被打击了

我考虑了很久仔细思量了

整件事从头到尾

因为他们要说服自己说服观众

但是有一个大大的转折

其中许多书籍讨论都缺少实质内容

通常都言过其实无法兑现
