FromtheverybeginningofAmericanhistory,AmericanshavebeengreatlyinfluencedbytheEnglishideathatboththeirrulersandtheirpeopleshouldbeundertheruleoflaw.ThiswayofthinkingwasappliedtotheAmericancoloniesfromthetimeoftheveryfirstpermanentEnglishcolony.AgroupofEnglishbusinessmenformedacompanycalledtheVirginiaCompany,withthepurposeofgettingrawmaterialsfromthelandofAmerica.TheEnglishkinggavethecompanyacharter,orastatementofpermission,allowingthemtosetupcoloniestocarryouttheirbusiness.Theircolonieswerepermittedtocreatesomeformofself-government,aslongastheymadenolawsagainstthelawsofEngland.
