Wealwaystellourselvesthatourlifewillbecompletewhenourspousegetshisorheracttogether.whenwegetanicecar,andareabletogoonanicevocationwhenweretire.Thetruthis,there'snobettertimethanrightnow.Ifnotnow,when?

Tuckedawayinoursubconsciousisanidyllicvision.Weseeourselvesonalongtripthatspansthecontinent.Wearetravelingbytrain.Outthewindows,wedrinkinthepassingsceneofcarsonnearbyhighways,ofchildrenwavingatacrossing,ofcattlegrazingonadistanthillside,ofsmokepouringfromapowerplant,ofrowuponrowofcornandwheat,offlatlandsandvalleys,ofmountainsandrollinghillsides,ofcityskylinesandvillagehalls.
Butuppermostinourmindsisthefinaldestination.Onacertaindayatacertainhour,wewillpullintothestation.Bandswillbeplayingandflagswaving.Oncewegetthere,somanywonderfuldreamswillcometrueandthepiecesofourliveswillfittogetherlikeacompletedjigsawpuzzle.Howrestlesslywepacetheaisles,damningtheminutesforloitering--waiting,waiting,waitingforthestation.

ItwasNewYear'sNight.Anagedmanwasstandingatawindow.Heraisedhismournfuleyestowardsthedeepbluesky,wherethestarswerefloatinglikewhiteliliesonthesurfaceofaclearcalmlake.Thenhecastthemontheearth,wherefewmorehopelesspeoplethanhimselfnowmovedtowardstheircertaingoal——thetomb.Hehadalreadypassedsixtyofthestagesleadingtoit,andhehadbroughtfromhisjourneynothingbuterrorsandremorse.Nowhishealthwaspoor,hismindvacant,hisheartsorrowful,andhisoldageshortofcomforts.
