tsthencross-checkedthatdataagainsttheknownlocationsofboats,gatheredfromasystemthatboatsusetodeclarethemselves,calledtheAutomaticIdentificationSystem(AIS).Anddifferencesappearedfrequently.
Morethanathirdofthetimesthebirds’recordersdetectedradarsignals,andthereforeaboat,nosuchboatappearedintheofficiallog(航海记录)—meaningthatthevehicleshadlikelyswitchedofftheirAutomaticIdentificationSystems—somethingtheresearcherssayprobablyhappensinillegalfishingoperations.
Theworksuggestsbirdscouldbeaneffectiveboat-monitoringtool—aslongasillegalfishingoperationsdon’ttargetthebirds.Fortunately,suchataskwouldbedifficult.
“Aroundfishingvessels,youcangethundredsofbirdsatanyonetimethatareallflyingaround.Soit’snotreallypossibletotargetaspecificbird.Andthebirdswithrecordersonarenotmarkedinanyway.Soit’sdifficultforfishermentopickoutaspecificbird,"saidstudyauthorSamanthaPatrick,amarinebiologistattheUniversityofLiverpool.
