EvenintheU.S.,wherethewishforastablecurrencyisstrong,thedollarhasfallenastaggering86%invaluesince1965,whenItookovermanagementofBerkshire.Ittakesnolessthan$7todaytobuywhat$1didatthattime.Consequently,atax-freeinstitutionwouldhaveneeded4.3%interestannuallyfrombondinvestmentsoverthatperiodtosimplymaintainitspurchasingpower.Itsmanagerswouldhavebeenkiddingthemselvesiftheythoughtofanyportionofthatinterestas"income."
