Recently,ateamfromtheWorldHealthOrganizationvisitedEthiopia,Ghana,RwandaandZambia.Thesecountrieswerethefirsttodistributethebednetsandmedicine.TheGlobalFundtoFightAIDS,TuberculosisandMalariarequestedastudytoseeiftheinterventionswerehelping.

Theresearchersfoundthattheanswerisyes.Theylookedatrecordsofchildrenunderfive.Theyfoundthatmalariadeathsfellbysixty-sixpercentinRwandabetweentwothousandfiveandtwothousandseven.Deathsfellbyfifty-onepercentinEthiopia,thirty-fourpercentinGhanaandthirty-threepercentinZambia.

TheteamreportedthatlimitedsuppliesofbednetscouldhelpexplainthemorelimitedeffectsinZambiaandGhana.ButthefindingsinGhanaweremoredifficulttoexplain,becausedeathsfromcausesotherthanmalariafellmoresharply.Thereportsaysthiswasinkeepingwithgeneralimprovementsinhealthservices.
