Shegotherwishfartoosoon.HerdiarycametoanabruptendinAugustof1944,whensheandothershidinginthe“SecretAnnex”werediscovered,arrested,andsenttoprison.Tragically,Anne,hersisterandhermother,alldiedthere.
Herfather,Otto,theonlysurvivoramongthosewhohidinAnnex,returnedtoAmsterdamafterthewar.Hewasdeeplymovedbyhisdaughter’descriptionsoflifeinAnnexandherfeelingsaboutherfamilyandotherresidents.Hedevotedtherestofhislifetosharingherstorywiththeworldsothatthesametragedythathappenedtohisfamilymightneverberepeated.Throughhercourage,herhope,andherunshakablefaithinthegoodnessofpeople,hershortlifeleftalonglegacy(遗产),touchingandinspiringgenerationaftergenerationofpeopleshenevermet.

Forthevolunteercrew,thecomics(arenowofferedonlineforfree)havealsogivenscientistsafriendlierface.“Wecanshowwhothescientistsare…thattheyarealsojustpeople,”saysGardiner,acancerbiologistattheFoxChaseCancerCenterinPhiladelphia.“We’renotallgeniuseswithEinstein-likehairthatareantisocialandjusthaveEurekamomentsallthetime.Andusingcomicsisanicewaytotelltheirstory.Theirlatest,Gilbert’sGlitchSwitch,releasedMarch2,seesabiochemistgetinvolvedinavideogamewherehehastotestaminoacid(氨基酸)combinationstogetproteinstocommunicateeffectively.
