ThatpointcanalsobeseenfromAntonia’sbook.There’saninterestingaccountofadinnerwithTomStoppardwherePintersaysthathedoesn’tplanhischaracters’livesandthenaskshisfellowdramatist,“Don’tyoufindtheytakeyouoversometimes?

”,towhichStoppardfirmlyreplies,“No.”Thatsaysalot.OnereasonwhyTheHomecomingisagreatplayisthatPinterallowshischaracters,almostunconsciously,totakeover.DespiteStoppard’smanystrengths,hetendstokeephischaractersunderamuchtightercontrol.

Again,there’saneye-openingpassageinAntonia’sbookwheresherecallsamomentin1983whenPinterrefersbacktohisrelationshipwithhisformerwife,Vivien,“Whileshewasalive,ifyouthinkaboutit,somuchofmyworkwasaboutunhappyfrozenmarriedrelationships.”
