NOTEONTHEINDEXANDGLOSSARY
BeingandTimeisaworkofmanyinterwoventhemes,wherewordsareusedinstrangewaysmadestrangerstillbytheshifttoanotherlanguage.Thereadermustconstantlyremindhimselfofhowspecificexpressionsareused,andhemustrecallthecontextsinwhichtheyhaveappearedbefore.InourindexofEnglishexpressionswehavetriedtolistmostofthosewhichhemayhaveoccasiontolookup,indicatingwhichGermanexpressionstheyhavebeenusedtotranslateandthechiefpassagesinwhichtheyappear.WehavealsoprovidedaGerman-EnglishglossaryforthebenefitofthereaderwhoneedsatranslationasanaidinstudyingtheGermantext,orwhohasreadotherworksofHeideggerordiscussionsofhistheoriesandwantstoknowhowwehavehandledspecificproblems.Wehavetakenthereaderintoourconfidence,asitwere,exposingnotonlythepedanticconsistencywithwhichmanyexpressionshavebeentreatedbutalsoourmanydeparturesfromconsistencywhenalittlemorepedantrymighthavebeenwarranted.
Ratherthanoverloadingtheindexandglossarywithtrivialdetails,wehavemadenoefforttolistalltheimportantexpressionswhichbelongtothesamefamily,buthaveusuallychosenoneortwotoserveasrepresentativesfortherest.Wehave,however,usedtheexpression'Butcf.'tointroducemembersofthefamilywhichhavebeenhandledinwaysotherthanthosewhichourmainentrysuggests;wehavedonesoeveninsomecaseswheretheseexceptionsarequitetrivial.
Inboththeindexandtheglossarywehaveusuallytriedtolistallthe'equivalents,forexpressionsofeachfamilyforwhichanentryismade.Inthose,caseswhereourlistisincomplete,wehaveusuallyindicatedthisbyan'etc.';andwecanassurethereaderthatmostoftheexpressionscoveredbythisabbreviationareoflittlephilosophicalimportance.Intheindex,anasterisk(*)attachedtoaGermanexpressionmeansthattothebestofourknowledgethisexpressionhasalwaysbeentranslatedbysomememberofthefamilyforwhichtheentryismade.Similarly,intheglossarywehaveusedasteriskstoindicatethoseEnglishexpressionswhich(againtothebestofourknowledge)havebeenusedsolelytotranslatethecorrespondingGermanexpressionanditscognates.Whenseveral'equivalents'arelisted,wehaveputthemorefrequentonesfirst.Ifawordnotmarkedwithanasteriskisgivenasan'equivalent'foranexpressionlistedintheglossary,butisnotitselflistedintheindex(orviceversa),wehavesometimesindicatedinparenthesestheotherexpressionstowhichitcorresponds.
WhenanEnglishexpressionhasbeenusedtotranslateseveralGermanwordsofwhichonlyoneortwoareofphilosophicalinterest,wehaveoftenconfinedourindexreferencesexplicitlytothese.WhentwoormoreEnglishexpressionshavebeenusedtotranslatethesameGermanword,wehavesometimesfounditconvenienttoputallthereferencestogetherunderasingleentry.See,forexample,ourentriesfor'assign'and'refer'.
Intheindexwehaveusuallymadenoattempttoindicateallthepassagesinwhichanexpressionoccurs.Indeedthereareseveralexpressionsoftheutmostimportance,occurringnearlyoneverypage,forwhichwehavebeencontentto
