”FrankPisanoscreamedoverthemicrophonetotheaircontroltowerattheairport.Oneofthetwoenginesonhisplanehadfailed,andhewasnowgoingdowntowardsoneofthebusiesthighwaysinAmerica—Interstate405,justsouthofLosAngeles—andtherewasnostoppingit.

Drivingsouthonthe405,neartheairport’srunway,wasJohnMeffert,afiredepartmentcaptain.Hewasheadinghomefromhisshiftwhensuddenlyalow-flyingplanecaughthiseye.Afterhetookasecondglance,athoughtcrossedhismind:

“Thisplane’sgoingtohitme.”

Hewasright.Theplaneslammedintotheroad,poppedupafewfeet,andthenclippedthefrontofMeffert’scar.Itfinallystoppedafterhittingthedivider(隔栏).Meffertpulledover.Hewasunhurt,andhiscarhadreceivedonlyalargescratch,soheturnedhisattentiontotheplane.Herantowardsthesmoke,andthenhesawFrank’swife,JananPisano,popherheaduponthepassengerside.

BythetimeMeffertreachedtheaircraft,partofitwasonfireandJanan,whowascoveredinblood,wasonthewingtryingtopullherhusbandfromthewreck.Meffert,afraidtheplanewouldexplode,guidedhertosafetybehindit.Then,heranbackforFrank,whohadbeenknockedoutbytheinitialcrash,lyingacrossbothseats.

In2011,Brownewroteapaperstatingthatasinglepieceofsynthetic(合成的)clothingcanproducemorethan1,900fibersperwash.Brownecollectedsamplesfromseawaterandfreshwatersitesaroundtheworld,andusedaspecialwaytoexamineeachsample.Hediscoveredthateverysinglewatersamplecontainedmicrofibers.

Thisisbadnewsforanumberofreasons.Plasticcancauseharmtosealifewheneaten.Studieshavealsoshownthatplasticcanabsorbotherpollutants.
