       problemsfacingforeignstudents

  TodayI'dliketotalkaboutsomeoftheproblemsthatstudentsfacewhentheyfollowacourceofstudythroughthemediumofEnglish--ifEnglishisnottheirmothertongue.

Theproblemscanbedividedintothreebroadcategories:

psychological,culturalandlinguistic.ThefirsttwocategoriesmainlyaffectthosewhocometostudyinBritainfromAsiaandAfrica.I'llcometocommentonlybriefyonthesetwocategoriesandthenspendmostofthetimelookingatlinguisticdifficultieswhichapplytoeveryone.someofthecommonpsychologicalproblemsreallyinvolvefearofunknown:

forexample,whetherone'sacademicstudieswillbetoodifficult.Lookingattheculturalproblems,wecanseethatsomeofthemareverypracticalnature,forexample,arrangingsatisfactoryaccommodation.Othersarelesseasytodefine.

Thelargestcategoryseemstobelinguistic.let'slookatthisinsomedetails.Moststudents,intheirowncountries,willhavelittleopportunitytopractiseusingEnglish.WhereforeignlearnersfirsthavetheopportunitytospeaktoanEnglish-speakingpersonthenmayhaveashock"theyoftenhavegreatdifficultyinunderstanding!

I'lljustmentionthreeofthepossiblereasonsforthis.

  Whatcanastudentdothentoovercomethesedifficulties?

Obviously,attendEnglishclassand,ifalanguagelaboratoryisavailable,useitasmuchaspossible.HeshouldalsolistentoprogramsinEnglishontheradioandTV.Perhapsmostimportantofall,heshouldtakeeveryopportunitytomeetandspeakwithnativeEnglish-speakingpeople.

Inaddition,thestudentprobablyhasdifficultyinspeakingEnglishfluently.Theadviceherewillseemdifficulttofollowbutit'snecessary.Firstly,hemustsimplifywhathewantstosaysothathecanexpresshimselfreasonablyclearly.Secondly,hemusttrytothinkinEnglish,nottranslatefromhismothertongue.ThiswillbegintotakeplaceonlywhenhisuseofEnglishbecomesautomatic.UsingalanguagelaboratoryandlisteningtoEnglishasmushaspossiblewillhelp.
