whatwasBeringialike?

TheBeringianlandscapewasverydifferentfromwhatitistoday.■Broad,windsweptvalleys;glaciatedmountains;sparsevegetation;andlessmoisturecreatedaratherforbiddinglandmass.■Thislandmasssupportedherdsofnow-extinctspeciesofmammoth,bison,andhorseandsomewhatmodernversionsofcaribou,muskox,elk,andsaigaantelope.■Thesegrazerssupportedinturnanumberofimpressivecarnivores,includingthegiantshort-facedbear,thesaber-toothcat,andalargespeciesoflion.■

ThepresenceofmammalspeciesthatrequiregrasslandvegetationhasledArcticbiologistDaleGuthrietoarguethatwhilecoldanddry,theremusthavebeenbroadareasofdensevegetationtosupportherdsofmammoth,horse,andbison.Further,nearlyalloftheice-agefaunahadteeththatindicateanadaptationtograssesandsedges;theycouldnothavebeensupportedbyamodernfloraofmossesandlichens.Guthriehasalsodemonstratedthatthelandscapemusthavebeensubjecttointenseandcontinuouswinds,especiallyinwinter.Hemakesthisargumentbasedontheanatomy
