DoctorSeusshadastrongdesiretohelpchildren.In1954,Lifemagazinepublishedareportaboutschoolchildrenwhocouldnotread.Thereportsaidmanychildren'sbookswerenotinteresting.Readingthereport,DoctorSeussdecidedtowritebooksthatwereinterestingandeasytoread.Tomakehisbookeasytoread,heusedwordswiththesameendingsound,likefishandwish.
In1957,Dr.SeusswroteTheCatintheHat,inwhichheusedlessthantwohundredtwenty-fivewords.Thiswasthenumberofwordsasix-year-oldshouldbeabletoread.Thebookwasanimmediatesuccess.Childrenlovedit.Theirparentslovedit,too.Todaymanyadultssayitisstilloneofthestoriestheylikebest.Thesuccessofthebookmadehimwanttowritemorebooksforchildren.HestartedaseriescalledBeginnerBooks,whichremainwelllikedamongchildrentoday.
