First,Eskimosspeakatleasttwodifferentlanguages—InuitandYupik.JustaswehavetalkedabouthowEnglishandmanyotherlanguagesdevelopedfromacommonlanguagecalledProto-Indo-European,InuitandYupikcomefromadifferentcommonlanguagecalledEskimo-Aleut.SosayingEskimoshave100wordsforsnowislikesayingEuropeanshave100wordsforkingsorqueens.Itmightbetellingyousomethingbroadaboutculture,butitisn'treallytellingyoumuchaboutlanguage.
Thesecondproblemis"Whatisaword?
”TheInuitandYupiklanguagesmakewordsindifferentwaysfromhowwemakewordsinEnglish.Forexample,theWestGreenlandicword'siku,'(seaice),isusedastherootfor'sikursuit(packice),'Sikuliaq(newice),and'sikurluk(meltingice).Butit'snotthatWestGreenlandichassomanymorewordsfordescribingsnowthanEnglish,it'sjustthatWestGreenlandicexpressesideasbycombiningmeaningfulunitsoflanguagetogetherintoonewordwhileEnglishusesmorephrasesandcompounds.Weexpressallthesameideas;wejustdoitalittledifferentlybecauseofthewayourlanguageisbuilt.
