EveryyearinspringmillionsofChinesepeoplesetoffonthejourneyhome.It’sthetimeoftheQingmingFestival,thefestivaloflight,when,sinceancienttimes,theChinesehavehonouredtheancestors.I’mheadingdowntothecityofWuxiforaveryspecialoccasionafamilyreunion.Forthelast30years,Chinesepeoplehavegrownupinaconsumersociety.AfterthebreakwithCommunism,Chinahasbeenonaheadlongrushintothefuture.Butthere’sadeeperChina,forasnewfreedomsbeckon,thepeoplethemselvesarereachingbacktothethingsthathavematteredmosttothemintheirhistory.AndfortheChinesepeople,identitybeginswiththefamily.Sometimesthenewproveslessenticingthanwasfirstthoughtandtheoldfarmoredurablethananyonehadeverimagined.

It’sdawnonthedayofancestors,whattheChinesecallTomb-SweepingDay.AndtheQinfamilygatheratthegraveoftheirfoundingancestor,QinGuan,apoetwholived1,000yearsago.TheyhavecomefromalloverChinaandfurtherafieldtomaketheirownreporttotheancestors.Totellthemhowthefamilyisdoingandhowtheancestorsandtheirvaluesstillliveoninus.Astheancientsusedtosay,repayingourroots.Amazingscene,isn’tit?
