“Blackholesarebeautifullysimple.Youjustneedtwonumberstodescribethemcompletely:
mass,howmuchtheybendspacetime,andaspin,howmuchspacetimemovesaboutthem,”saidDr.ChristopherBerryoftheUniversityofBirmingham,oneoftheresearchersintheproject.“Butittakeslotsofhardworktomeasurethesefromourdata.Wenowhavewonderfulmassmeasurements,andarestartingtouncoverdetailsaboutthespinsoftheseblackholes,whichcouldgiveevidenceforhowtheyformed.”TheresearcherssaidtheirdiscoveryaddedfurtherevidencetosupportEinstein'sgeneraltheoryofrelativityandconfirmedtheexistenceofpreviouslyunknownblackholes.
Morethan1,000scientistsfromtheLIGOScientificCollaborationwereinvolvedintheprojectalongwithanadditional280researchersfromtheEuropeanbasedVirgoCollaboration.Scientistshopegravitationalwaveswillofferacompletelydifferentviewoftheuniverse,allowingthemtostudyeventsthatmightbehiddenfromtraditionaltelescopes.“Wehavefurtherconfirmationoftheexistenceofstellar(恒星的)massblackholesthatarelargerthan20solarmasses.Wedidn'tknowtheyexistedbeforeLIGOdetectedthem,”MITresearcherDavidShoemakersaid.
