AtholAndersonoftheAustralianNationalUniversitybelievesthattheymayalsohavebeenlucky—helpedbyaweatherphenomenon(现象)knownasEINino.E1Ninooccurs(发生)inthePacificOceanwhenthesurfacewatertemperatureisunusuallyhigh.Itaffectsworldweatherinavarietyofways,butoneofitseffectsistocausetradewindsintheSouthPacifictoweakenortochangedirectionandblowtotheeast.ScientistsbelievethatE1NinophenomenawereunusuallyfrequentaroundthetimeoftheLapitaexpansion,andagainwhenearlyPolynesiansbegantheirevenmoredistantjourneys.
