Whatisclassicliterature?

Classicsaretheantiquesoftheliteraryworld.Theyarenovels,playsandpoemsthatwerewrittenalongtimeagoandweresowellwrittenandwellreceivedthatpeoplestillreadthemtoday.Theyareexamplesofgreatwritingandwisdom,andeventhosewrittencenturiesagocanstillbefoundinbookshopsandlibrariestoday.

Becausealotofclassicswerewrittensolongago,thelanguageusedinthemisquitedifferentfromthelanguageusedtoday.Thismakesthemdifficultforsomepeopletoread,andoften,theclassicsarelefttogatherdustonshelves.Manypeopledonotreadthembecausetheythinkthattheyareold-fashionedandboring,andhavenothingtodowithlifetoday.

However,ifthisistrue,whydowestillfindclassicsinbookshopsandlibraries?

Theyhavenotdisappearedandstillhaveaplaceintheworldtoday.Whyelsewouldmanyfilmsbasedonthembesuccessful?

In1995,Clueless,theaward-winningfilmbasedonJaneAustin’snovelEmma,wasreleased.Threeyearslater,in1998,amodernadaptationofCharlesDickens’snovelGreatExpectationsappearedincinemas.Idonotthinkthattheseclassicnovelswouldbemadeintofilmsiftheyhadnothingtodowithlifetoday.

CharlesDickens:

‘England’sgreatestwriter’

CharlesDickenswasborninPortsmouth,Englandin1812.Hewrotemanynovels.OliveTwist,DavidCopperfieldandGreatExpectationsareprobablyhisbest-knownworks.Hefirstpublishedmanynovelsonechapteratatimeinnewspapers,andsomewerelaterperformedonstage.Forpeopleatthattime,hisstorieswerelikethesoapoperasweseeonTVtoday.

Hediedin1870andhistombreads,‘byhisdeath,oneofEngland’sgreatestwritersislosttotheworld.’

GreatExpectations

GreatExpectationsissetinEnglandintheearly1800s.DickensusesPip,themaincharacter,totellthestory.Pipisnotonlyacharacter,healsotellsthestoryofGreatExpectations.PipliveswithhisoldersisterandherhusbandJoe.Pip’ssisterseldomhasakindwordtosay,butJoeisakindandsimpleman,whowouldratherdiethanseeanyharmcometoPip.

Pip,whoissevenyearsoldwhenthestorybegins,isinamistyfieldoftombswhenamanappearsandfrightenshim.MistisasymbolofdangeranduncertaintyinGreatExpectations.Classicnovelsoftenhavesymbolswhichaddinterest,tensionordeepermeaningtothetext.Readersmaynotbeabletoseethedanger,sotheyneedasymbollikethemisttomakeitclearertothem.

ThereisatwistintheplotwhenaverygenerousstrangergivesPipalotofmoney.Pipisabout18yearsoldwhenthishappens,andthefortunesetshimfreefromthefinancialworries.PipmakestheabruptdecisiontomovefromKent,whichisaconstantremainderofhisshabbybeginnings,tothebrightlightsofLondon.

ExcitedbyhismovetoLondon,Pipcanhardlywaittobeginhisnewlife.Moneyandeducationhavechangedhim,andbeforelonghedevelopstheshortcomingsofbeingshallowandhavingprejudice,evenagainsthisoldcompanions.PipdislikesitwhenJoecomestovisithiminLondon.Hehasrigidideasofwhatitmeanstobecivilandtobeagentleman,andisembarrassedbyJoehedoesnotfitthese.
