challenger.weknowwesharethispainwithallofthepeopleofourcountry.thisistrulyanationalloss.

nineteenyearsago,almosttotheday,welostthreeastronautsina

terribleaccidentontheground.butweveneverlostanastronautinflight.weveneverhadatragedylikethis.andperhapsweveforgottenthe

courageittookforthecrewoftheshuttle.butthey,thechallengerseven,wereawareofthedangers,butovercamethemanddidtheirjobs

brilliantly.wemournsevenheroes:

michaelsmith,dickscobee,judithresnik,ronaldmcnair,ellisononizuka,gregoryjarvis,andchristamcauliffe.wemourntheirlossasanationtogether.

forthefamiliesoftheseven,wecannotbear,asyoudo,thefullimpactofthistragedy.butwefeeltheloss,andwerethinkingaboutyousoverymuch.yourlovedonesweredaringandbrave,andtheyhadthatspecial

grace,thatspecialspiritthatsays,givemeachallenge,andillmeetitwithjoy.theyhadahungertoexploretheuniverseanddiscoveritstruths.theywishedtoserve,andtheydid.theyservedallofus.

wevegrownusedtowondersinthiscentury.itshardtodazzleus.butfortwenty-fiveyearstheunitedstatesspaceprogramhasbeendoingjustthat.wevegrownusedtotheideaofspace,and,perhapsweforgetthatweveonlyjustbegun.werestillpioneers.they,themembersofthechallengercrew,werepioneers.

andiwanttosaysomethingtotheschoolchildrenofamericawhowerewatchingthelivecoverageoftheshuttlestake-off.iknowitshardtounderstand,butsometimespainfulthingslikethishappen.itsallpartoftheprocessofexplorationanddiscovery.itsallpartoftakingachanceandexpandingmanshorizons.thefuturedoesntbelongtothe

fainthearted;itbelongstothebrave.thechallengercrewwaspullingusintothefuture,andwellcontinuetofollowthem.

ivealwayshadgreatfaithinandrespectforourspaceprogram.andwhathappenedtodaydoesnothingtodiminishit.wedonthideourspaceprogram.wedontkeepsecretsandcoverthingsup.wedoitallupfrontandinpublic.thatsthewayfreedomis,andwewouldntchangeitforaminute.

toafewofusheretoday,thisisasolemnandmostmomentousoccasion;andyet,

authorityascalledforintheconstitutionroutinelytakesplaceasithasforalmosttwo

centuriesandfewofusstoptothinkhowuniquewereallyare.intheeyesofmanyinthe

world,thisevery-4-yearceremonyweacceptasnormalisnothinglessthanamiracle.

productivity.butgreatasourtaxburdenis,ithasnotkeptpacewithpublicspending.for

decades,wehavepileddeficitupondeficit,mortgagingourfutureandourchildrensfuture

forthetemporaryconvenienceofthepresent.tocontinuethislongtrendistoguarantee

tremendoussocial,cultural,political,andeconomicupheavals.

therebenomisunderstanding--wearegoingtobegintoact,beginningtoday.

awayindays,weeks,ormonths,buttheywillgoaway.theywillgoawaybecausewe,as

americans,havethecapacitynow,aswehavehadinthepast,todowhateverneedstobe

donetopreservethislastandgreatestbastionoffreedom.

inthispresentcrisis,governmentisnotthesolutiontoourproblem.governmentisthe

problem.

作为个人，你们和我可以靠借贷过一种人不敷出的生活，然而只能维持一

段有限的时期，我们怎么可以认为，作为一个国家整体，我们就不应受到同样的

约束呢？

ourhomes,andhealuswhenwearesick--professionals,industrialists,shopkeepers,clerks,

cabbies,andtruckdrivers.theyare,inshort,wethepeople,thisbreedcalledamericans.
