OneJune4th,myfamilyandIdecidedtogowhitewaterrafting(急流泛舟)downtheNantahalaRiverinWesternNorthCarolina.Itwasaperfectdaytobeoutonthewater.Myfatherthoughtthatwecouldalldealwithanewsituation,sohedecidedtobringustogowithoutaguideatthisnew,hardcourse.MymomandIwereupsetbymydad’sdecision,butmybrotherwaspleasedwithit.Wegotlifejackets,ourraftandpaddlesthatareusedtorowit,andthentookabustothedroppointwherewecarriedtherafttotheicycoldwater.Havingfinishedthetraining,wewereonourown.

Withinthefirsthour,wegotstuckontworocks.Anotherrafthadtohitourstogetusofftherocks.Afterabouttwohours,wesawahugerockontherightsideoftheriver.Itwascomingoutofthewaterabouttenfeethighandaboutfifteenfeetwide.Somehow,weendedupontopofthisrock.Afteraboutaminute,waterstartedrushinginwheremybrotherwassitting.Whenhestartedfallingintothewater,Itriedtopullhimback.Unfortunately,wefello

fftogether.Mymotherjumpedinafterus,butshecouldonlygettomybrotherbecausehewascloserthanIwas.Mydadjumpedoutandranupthebankoftherivertogettotheroad,sohecouldseewhereIwas.Littletohisknowledge,Iwaspickedupafterabouttwominutesbyastrangerinanotherraftandwasheadingdowntherivertowardalittlerestingspot.IkeptcryingbecauseIwassofrightenedandworriedaboutmyfamily.Thankfully,everyonewasfine,justalittleshakenupandverycold.

Itwasthe7thDuchessofBedfordwho,inaround1800,startedthepopular“afternoontea”,whichtookplaceataboutfouro’clock.Ataboutthesametime,theEarlofSandwichpopularisedanewwayofeatingbreadwithsomething(e.g.jam)betweenthem,andbeforelong,asmallmealattheendoftheafternoonwithteaan

dsandwicheshadbecomepartofawayoflife.

Asteabecamemuchcheaperduringthenineteenthcentury,itspopularityspreadrightthroughBritishsociety.Inworking-classhouseholds,itwasservedwiththemainmealoftheday,eatenwhenworkersreturnedhomeafteraday’slabour.Thismealhasbecomeknownas“hightea”.
