Fluorescentlights

Fluorescentlightsarethemostenergy-efficientformoflightingforhouseholds.Theyarealittlemoreexpensivetobuythanstandardincandescentlightbulbsbutaremuchcheapertorunandlastlonger.

They'reavailableasfluorescenttubesorascompactfluorescentlights（CFLs）whichcanfitinanormallightsocket.

CFLscangiveasmuchlightasincandescentbulbsyetuseonlyabout20%oftheelectricity.Theylastupto10,000hours.Thisisabout10timeslongerthanthelifeofastandardbulb.Thesavingscanamounttoover$100overthelifeofthelight.

ThoughmostCFLshavealonger,thinnershapethanstandardincandescentlightbulbs,somesoldinNewZealandhavethesameshapeasthestandardbulbs.

Fluorescenttubesandcompactfluorescentlampscontainmercuryandcadmium.Theyshouldbedisposedofashazardouswaste.Contactyourlocalcouncilorlandfillaboutyourdisposaloptions.

Halogenlamps

Allhalogenlampsrequirespeciallightfittings.Halogenslampsareoftenrecessedandthismayrequireholesinceilinginsulationthroughwhichheatcanescape.

They'reoftenusedforspotlightingpaintingsorfortasklightingdirectlyoveracookingareaordesk.Theyarenotgoodforbackgroundlighting.
