★ latter最常用的含义是“两者中的（后者）”，常与the连用，固定搭配“theformer…，thelatter…”。
如：

Morethan+adj./adv./分词/v.意为“非常，很”。

morethan+句子,意为“非……所能……”“是……难以……的”

★ becauseof因为……，由于……的缘故
①Becauseoftheheavyrain,wehadtostayathome.
由于大雨，我们只能呆在家里。
②Hewasangrybecauseofwhatyousaid.
becauseof,owingto,dueto,thanksto这四个短语都有“由于，因为”的意思，都是介词短语，因此后面不可接从句，what引导的宾语从句除外。
（1） becauseof强调因果关系，在句子中一般做状语。
LiuXianggaveupthecompetitionbecauseofhisinjury.
Becauseitwasrainingoutside，westayedathome．
=Becauseoftherainoutside,westayedathome．
因为外面下着雨，所以我们就呆在家里。

（2） owingto与becauseof一样，也强调因果关系，作表语或作状语。
Thegamewascancelledowingtotheheavyrain.
比赛因大雨取消了。
（3）dueto引出造成后果的原因，在句中做表语，状语。
但一般不放在句首。
Theteam’ssuccesswaslargelyowingtoherefforts.
这个队的成功在很大程度上是她努力的结果。
（4）thanksto只能用作状语，表示“幸亏”的意思。
Thankstothedoctor,sherecovered.
★ comeup:
走近；上来；发芽；发生；被提出；（太阳，月亮等）升起
comeupwith:
提出，想出，
①Hecameuptointroducehimself.他走上前来介绍自己。

★ a number of…意思是“一些，若干”（= some），后接可数名词复数或代词，谓语动词用复数形式。
a number of…词组中还可以加入形容词表示数量大或小等（例如：

【辨析】a number of,the number of
the number of…意思是“……的数字/数目”，介词of同其后名词构成介词短语，修饰the number。
当它作主语时，谓语动词用单数。
例如：
Many people took part in 10,000-metre race, but only a number of them
kept on running to the end.
许多人参加了10000米跑，但只有一些人坚持跑到底。
