TangDynastyOnJune18,618,Gaozutookthethrone,andtheTangDynastywasestablished,anewageofprosperityandinnovationsinartsandtechnology.Buddhism,hadgraduallybeenestablishedinChinafromthefirstcentury,becamethepredominantreligionandwasadoptedbytheimperialfamilyandmanyofthecommonpeople.Chang'an((modernXi'an),thenationalcapital,isthoughttohavebeentheworld'slargestcityatthetime.TheTangandtheHanareoftenreferredtoasthemostprosperousperiodsofChinesehistory.TheTang,liketheHan,
keptthetraderoutesopentothewestandsouthandtherewasextensivetradewithdistantforeigncountriesandmanyforeignmerchantssettledinChina.TheTangintroducedanewsystemintotheChinesegovernment,calledthe"Equal
FieldSystem"(均田制).ThissystemgavefamilieslandgrantsfromtheEmperorbasedontheirneeds,nottheir
wealth.Fromabout860theTangDynastybegantodeclineduetoaseriesofrebellionswithinChinaitself,andinthe
previouslysubjectKingdomofNanzhao(南诏,南诏)tothesouth.ofthewarlords,HuangChao,capturedGuangzhouin
879,killingmostofthe200,000inhabitantsincludingmostofthelargecolonyofforeignmerchantfamiliesthere.Inlate880Luoyangsurrenderedtohimandon5January,881he
conqueredChang'an.TheemperorXizong(唐僖宗)fledtoChengduandHuangestablishedanewtemporaryregime,
whichwaseventuallydestroyedbyTangforces,butanother
timeofpoliticalchaosfollowed

Forthousandsofyears,poetryhasbeenthefavoritetypeofliteratureformanyinChina.AsChinaHighlightswebsitenoted,“ChineseliteratureisoneofthemajorpartsofChina’sancienttraditions,andChinesepoetryisjustlikethebestprizeinthisfamousculture’sliterarytreasurehouse.”
ThereweremanyfamouspoetsfromdifferentperiodsoftimeinChinesehistory,andthousandsoftheirpoemsare
stillreadandappreciatedtoday.
ToremindpeopleofthoseclassicChinesepoemsandtopromoteculturalheritage,ChinaCentralTelevision(CCTV)hasproducedaTVshow–ChinesePoetryCompetition.Thefinaleofthehitshow’ssecondseasonwasshownonFeb7.
WuYishu,16,whostudiesattheHighSchoolattachedtoFudanUniversityinShanghai,cameoutontop.Inanearlierepisode,Wuwowedtheaudiencewhenperforminginasectionentitled“Feihualing”.Thegame’sthemewas“yue”,meaning“moon”or“month”inChinese.SherecitedlinesfromtheClassicofPoetry,theearliestcollectionofpoemsinChina:
“InJuly,thecricketsareinthefield;InAugust,theyareintheyard;InSeptembertheyareatthedoor;InOctober,thecricketsenterandcrawlunderourbeds.“Ireallyadmireherknowledgeofpoems,”saidHuangZijin,16,asenior2studentfromNingboHighSchoolinZhejiangprovince.“ThefirsttimeIsawherwearingtraditionalHanclothingonTV,Iwasveryimpressedbyherclassicallooks.ShefulfillsallmyfantasiesforclassicChinesewomen’stalents.What’smore,shealwaysappearssocalmthroughout
