Hi,mynameisMartyFieldingandIguessyoucouldsayIam“oneisamillion”.Inotherwords,therearenotmanypeopleintheworldlikeme.Yousee,IhaveamusclediseasethatsometimesmakesmeveryweakandIcan’trunorclimbstairsasquicklyasotherpeople.Also,sometimesIamclumsyanddropthingsorbumpintofurniture.Thedoctorsdon’tknowexactlywhatiswrongwithme,sotheydon’tknowhowtomakemewell.Unfortunately,theycan’tmewhetherIwillgetworsgasIgetolder,orIwillstaythesameasIamnow.Ihavelearnedtoadapttomydisability.Mymottois:

liveonedayatatime.

UpuntilIwasabout10yearsold,Iwasthesameaseveryoneelseinmyclass.Iusedtoclimbtreesandswimandplayfootball.Infact,IusedtodreamaboutonedaybeingafamousfootballplayerandrepresentingmycountryintheWorldCup.ThenIstartedtogetweakerandweaker.SomedaysIwastootiredtogetoutofbed.Iwentintohospitalfortests.Istayedtherefornearlythreemonthsandmissedalotofschool.IthinkIhadatleastobilliontestswhileIwasthere,includingoneinwhichtheycutoutapieceofmusclefrommylegandlookedatitunderamicroscope.Evenafterallthetests,noonecouldgivemydiseaseaname,soitisdifficulttoknowwhatthefuturewillbelike.

OneoftheworstthingsaboutmydiseaseisthatIdon’tlookanydifferentfromotherpeople.SosometimeskidslaughatmewhenIgetoutofbreathafterrunningjustashortwayorIhavetostophalfwayupthestairsandrestbeforeIcangetuptothetop.Sometimes,Iamtooweaktogotoschool,soIhavemissedalotoflessons.Everytimeafteralongabsencefromschool,IfeelreallystupidbecauseIamabitbehindtheothers.

Mylifeisaloteasierathighschoolthanitwasatprimaryschool.MyfellowstudentshavebeguntoacceptmeforwhoIam.Ofcourse,therewillalwaysbeafewwhocannotseetherealpersoninsidemybody,butIdonotgetannoyed,Ijustignorethem.

Allinall,Ihaveagoodlife.IamhappytohavefoundmanythingsIcandoreallywell,likewritingandcomputerprogramming.Myam-bitionistoworkinthecomputerindustrywhenIgrowup.LastyearIinventedacomputerfootballgameandabigcompanyhasdecidedtobuyitfromme.IhaveaverybusylifeandIdon’thavetimetositaroundfeelingsorryformyself.AswellasgoingtothemoviesandfootballmatcheswithmyfriendswhenIamwellenough,Ispendalotoftimewithmypets.Ihavetworabbits,fivemiceandatankfulloffish.Also,Iamtheonlystudentinmyclasstohaveapetsnake.Mypetstakealotoftimetolookafter,butIgetalotofenjoymentoutofthem.Ihavealotofstudytodoaswell,especiallyafterIhavebeensickforawhile.

Inmanywaysmydisabilityhasmademegrowstrongerandmoreindependent.Ihavehadtoworkhardtoliveanormallife,butithasbeenworthit.IfIhadthechancetosayonethingtohealthykids,itwouldbethis:

Justhavingadisabilitydoesn’tmeanyourlifeisnotsatisfying.Sodon’tfeelsorryforthedisabledormakefunofthem,anddon’tignorethemeither.Justacceptthemforwhotheyareandgivethemencouragementtoliveasrichandfullalifeasyoudo.

2Earphonesforpeoplewhohavetroublehearing.Thereshouldbeearphonesbesideallseats,notjustafew.Thiswillallowhearing-Impairedcustomerstoenjoythecompanyoftheirhearingfriendsratherthanhavingtositinaspecialarea.

3Raisedseating.Theseatsatthebackofthecinemashouldbeplacedhigherthantheonesatthefrontsothateveryone,whethertheyareshortortall,canseethescreeneasily.Thereshouldbeaspaceattheendofeachrowsothatpeopleinwheelchairscansitbesidetheirfriends.

4Toilets.Thereshouldbetoiletsforthedisabledneartheentrancestothecinema.Itisnotgoodenoughtohaveonlyonedisabledtoiletinthebasementalongwayfromwherethemovieisshowing.

5Carparking.Ofcourse,therealsohavetobecarparkingspacesespeciallyforthedisabledandelderlyanditshouldbeeasyforthemtogetfromthecarparktothecinema.

Recentlyitwasexperimentingwitharobotthatcouldbeusedtodothehousework.ItwasgoingtobetestedoutbyLarry’swife,Claire.

Clairedidn’twanttherobotinherhouse,especiallyasherhusbandwouldbeabsentforthreeweeks,butLarrypersuadedherthattherobotwouldn’tharmherorallowhertobeharmed.However,whenshefirstsawtherobot,shefeltalarmed.Therobot,calledTony,didn’tlooklikeamachineatall.Hewastallandhandsomealthoughhisfacialexpressionsneverchanged.Hishairwassmoothandblackandhisvoicewasdeep.

OnthesecondmorningTonybroughtherbreakfastandthenaskedherwhethersheneededhelpdressing.Shefelfembarrassedandquicklytoldhimtogo.Itwasdisturbingandfrighteningthathelookedsohuman.

Oneday,Clairementionedthatshedidn’tthinkshewasclever.Tonysaidthatshemustfeelveryunhappytosaythat.Clairethoughtitwasridiculoustobeofferedsympathybyarobot.Butshebegantotrusthim.Shetoldhimhowsheandherhomeweren’telegantenoughforsomeonelikeLarrywhowantedtoimprovehissocialposition.Shewasn’tlikeGladysClaffern,oneoftherichestandmostpowerfulwomenaround.

TonywantedtopleaseClairebyhelpinghermakeherselfandherhomeelegant.SoClaireborrowedapileofbooksfromthelibraryforhimtoreador,rather,scan.Shelookedathisfingerswithwonderastheyturnedeachpageandsuddenlyreachedforhishand.Shewasamazedbyhisfingernailsandthesofthessandwarmthofhisskin.Howabsurd,shethought.Hewasjustamachine.

TonygaveClaireanewhaircutandchangedthemakeupshewore.Ashewasnotallowedtoaccompanyhertotheshops,hewroteoutalistofitemsforher.clairewentintothecityandboughtcurtains,cushions,acarpetandpaint.Thenshewentintoadressshop.Whenthesalesmanwasrudetoher,sherangTonyupandtoldthesalesmantospeaktohim.Thesalesmanimmediatelychangedhisattitude.ClairethankedTony,tellinghimthathewasa“dear”.Assheturnedaround,therestoodGladysClaffern.Howawfultobediscoveredbyher,Clairethought.Bytheamusedandsurprisedlookonherface,ClaireknewthatGladysthoughtshewashavinganaffair.Afterall,sheknewClaire’shusband’snamewasLarry,notTony.

WhenClairegothome,sheweptwithanger.GladyswasevergthingGlairewantedtobe.Youcanbelikeher,TonytoldherandhesuggestedthatsheinviteGladysandherfriendstothehousethenightbeforehewastoleaveandLarrywastoreturn.Bythattime,Tonyexpectedthehousetobecompletelytransformed.

Tonyworkedsteadilyontheimprovements.Clairetriedtohelponcebutwastooclumsy.ShefelloffaladderandeventhoughTonywasinthenextroom,hemanagedtocatcnherintime.Heheldherfirmlyinhisarmsandshefeltthewarmthofhisbody.Shescreamed,pushedhimawayandrantoherroomfortherestoftheday.

Thensheremembered-Tonywasjustamachine.Sheshouted“Leavemealone”andrantoherbed.Shecriedallnight.ThenextmorningacardroveupandtookTonyaway.

ThecompanywasverypleasedwithTony’sreportonhisthreeweekswithClaire.Tonyhadprotectedahumanbeingfromharm.HehadpreventedClairefromharmingherselfthroughherownsenseoffailure.HehadopenedthecurtainsthatnightsothattheotherwomenwouldseehimandClaire,knowingthattherewasnorisktoClaire’smarriage.But
