Quiltingistheprocessofsewingtogetherfabric(作料)tomakeonelargepieceoffabric.Inmyfamily,quiltingandsewingisatraditionthathasbeenpasseddownthroughthegenerations.Mymothersayshergreat-grandmotherwouldoccasionallytravelaroundNewYorkStatetosewclothingforotherfamilies.
IntheUnitedStates,quiltingwasacraft(手艺)thatstartedasanecessityandeventuallybecamemuchmore.In1862,theU.S.governmentofferedmillionsofacresoflandtoAmericanswhowantedtomovewest.Thisallowedfamiliestosettleonlandthatthatcouldeventuallyown.Theyoftenbuilttheirownhomesandlivedoffthevegetablesintheirgardensandthelivestocktheyhad.Sewingwasveryimportantforwomenbecausetheywereresponsibleforclothingtheirfamiliesandkeepingthemwarm.
Quiltingalsobecameachanceforwomentosocializewitheachother.Theywouldgatherforso-called“quiltingbees”,wheretheywouldmeetupandworkononequiltingprojecttogether.Thisprovidedamuch-neededrelieffromthelonelylifeoflivingonalargepieceofland.
Throughouthistory,thedifferentpatternsonAmericanquiltshaveconveyedallkindsofinformation.Fromthen,wecantellwhereapersonlived,whatregionoftheworldtheyoriginatedfrom,orsometimesastoryistoldinpicturesonaquilt.
Eventoday,womenstillgathertoquittogetherinashowoffriendshipandaloveforthecraft,justliketheolddays.Mysisterhastriedquiltingafewtimes,andhopefully,hertwodaughtersmayonedaycontinuethisfamilytradition.
