Quiltingistheprocessofsewingtogetherfabric（作料）tomakeonelargepieceoffabric.Inmyfamily，quiltingandsewingisatraditionthathasbeenpasseddownthroughthegenerations.Mymothersayshergreat-grandmotherwouldoccasionallytravelaroundNewYorkStatetosewclothingforotherfamilies.

IntheUnitedStates，quiltingwasacraft（手艺）thatstartedasanecessityandeventuallybecamemuchmore.In1862,theU.S.governmentofferedmillionsofacresoflandtoAmericanswhowantedtomovewest.Thisallowedfamiliestosettleonlandthatthatcouldeventuallyown.Theyoftenbuilttheirownhomesandlivedoffthevegetablesintheirgardensandthelivestocktheyhad.Sewingwasveryimportantforwomenbecausetheywereresponsibleforclothingtheirfamiliesandkeepingthemwarm.

Quiltingalsobecameachanceforwomentosocializewitheachother.Theywouldgatherforso-called“quiltingbees”，wheretheywouldmeetupandworkononequiltingprojecttogether.Thisprovidedamuch-neededrelieffromthelonelylifeoflivingonalargepieceofland.

Throughouthistory,thedifferentpatternsonAmericanquiltshaveconveyedallkindsofinformation.Fromthen，wecantellwhereapersonlived，whatregionoftheworldtheyoriginatedfrom,orsometimesastoryistoldinpicturesonaquilt.
