Writinginthelate1800s,JulesVernewasremarkablysuccessfulinhis10guessesaboutfuturetechnologiesofairconditioning,automobiles,theInternet,television,andunderwater,air,andspacetravel.Unbelievably,ofallplacesfromwhichtochoose,JulesVerneguessedTampa,Florida,USAasthelaunchingsiteofthefirstprojecttotheMoon,whichwasonly200kilometersawayfromtheactual1969locationatCapeCanaveral,Florida.

Oneofthebest-knownsciencefictionbooksisNineteenEighty-FourbyGeorgeOrwell.Publishedin1949,itwasnotmeantasaprediction,butasawarning:

Orwellwasdescribingwhathesawastheoutcomeoftheideas,trends,andemergingtechnologiesofhistime.Manyinventedtermsfromthisnovelhavebecomecommonineverydayuse,suchas“bigbrother”and“doublethink”.Eventheauthor’snamehasbeenmadeintoanadjective—Orwellian—andhasbecomeawarningdescriptorforsituationswhereprivacyislostandtheindividualhasnopowerandiscompletelycontrolledbythegovernment.NineteenEighty-Fourwastranslatedintosixty-fivelanguageswithinfiveyearsofitspublication,settingarecordthatstillstands.
