WhenOliverleftforChicago,ArmstrongchosetostayinNewOrleansandworkwithsomeoftheothertopmusiciansoftheday.InChicago,KingJoeOliverofferedhimaplaceinhisbandin1922.ItbecameArmstrong’sbiggestchallengeyet—thebandhadnopartswrittenfortrumpet,sohewasforcedtolistentoKingOliverandimprovise(即兴创作).

Soon,Armstrong’sundeniabletalentwasgettingnoticed.Evenclassicallytrainedmusicianswouldcometoheartheincrediblesoundsthisyoungmancreated.

LilHardin,theband’spianoplayerandthefutureMrs.Armstrong,explainedthatOliverkeptArmstronginthesecondtrumpet-chairsothatOliverwouldstillbe“King”.Hardinconvincedhimtoleavetheband.
