Thisisnotaboutprivatisation.Whatmattersiswhatisdelivered,notwhodeliversit.Thismustbeattheheartofhealthservicereform.Charitiescanofferabetterdealinsomanyways.In2008theNHSspentjustover0.05percentofitshealthcarebudgetthroughcharities.Inotherwordsthisisavirtuallyuntappedresourcewaitingtobeused.

Tome,competitionintheNHSmeansBritishRedCrossvolunteersbeingabletohelpmorepeopletoadapttolifeathomeafteralengthyspellinhospital,sopreventingtheneedforreadmission.Thosewhogetthissupportareoftenagedover65andhaveexperiencedafall.Volunteersbringthemhome,settlethemin,adviseneighboursorrelativesoftheirreturn,checkonpets,helptoprepareamealandmakeafurthervisittoensurethattheyaresafeandwell.SuchschemescansavethetypicalNHScommissionerupto?
