Theworld’slongesthigh-speedrailwayroute,runningfromBeijingtoGuangzhou,hasofficiallyopened.Thelinewillcuttraveltimebetweenthetwocitiesfrom22hourstoonly8hours.

ThefirstbullettrainpulledoutofBeijingWestRailwayStationat9amonWednesday,withanarrivaltimeof5pm.Withcomfortableseating,spaciousandquietcabins,thenewlineoffersamuchmorepleasantjourneythanoldertrains.

“Iamexcitedtotryoutthenewservice.Ithinktherideisveryfastandsteady.Itsavesmethehassleofdrivingtotheairport,orwaitinginthelongqueueforsecuritychecks."

Withtrainsrunningatthree-hundredkilometersperhour,theonce22-hourlongtripisslashedtoonly8hours.

ThehighspeedrailwayconnectsBeijingwithfiveprovincialcapitals.Partoftheline,fromZhengzhoutoGuangzhou,wasalreadyinoperation.TheopeningoftheBeijingtoZhengzhousectionhasconnectedtheentireline,whichspansatotallengthof2,298kilometers.

ZhaoChunlei,deputydirectorofMinistryofRailways,said,"Thehighspeedrailwillpromoteregionaleconomicintegrationandurbanizationalongtheroute.Itconnectstheonceseparatedhighspeedraillines,boostingpassengerflowsandeconomicexchanges.Itwillalsoeasetrafficpressures,especiallyduringtheSpringFestivaltravelpeak."

Beingthelongesthigh-speedrailwayintheworld,theBeijing-GuangzhoulineconnectsonethirdofChina’spopulationandmorethan40-percentofitseconomicpower.Ordinarycommuterswillbenefitfromtheefficientnetwork,andfindthattheirhometownsarenotthatfaraway.
