GlobalwarmingwillmeltArcticpermafrost(永久冻土),releasinglargeamountsofstoredgreenhousegases.Butiffiresintheregionbecomemorecommon,thatcouldhaveevenbiggerconsequences.Wildfireswillreleasemuchfasterandbiggeramountsofcarbon,ratherthanmeltingpermafrost.Thefiresalsoproduceblackcarbonwhich,ifdroppedontheArcticseaicebyfavourablewinds,willdarkenitssurface,makingitmorelikelytoabsorbsunlightandmelt.ThisdecreasesthereflectivityoftheregionandfurtherincreasesArcticwarming.
