4.2KeyboardBuffer
A16keyFIFObufferstoresthescancodesuntilthehostisreadytoreceivethem.Bufferoverrunoccurswhenmorethan16keysarestoredwithoutbeingsent.Anoverruncodereplacesthe17thkeytobestoredinthebuffer.Additionalkeyspressedwillcauselossofdataifthehostiskeptbusyandthekeyboardisunabletosendoutthecontentsinthebuffer.
4.3Typematicdelayandrepeatrate
Allkeysaretypematic,exceptforthePAUSEkey.Whenakeyispressedandhelddown,thekeyboardwilldelay500msec,thensendthemakecode.Makecodeofthekeybeinghelddownwillbesentrepeatedlyattherateof10.9characterspersecond.Iftwoormorekeysarepressedandhelddown,onlythelastkeypressedwillberepeatedattherepeatrate.Whenthelastkeyisreleased,typematicoperationstops,evenifotherkeysarestillhelddown.Ifakeyispressedandhelddownwhilekeyboardtransmissionisdisabled,onlythefirstkey’smakecodeisstoredinthetypeaheadbuffer.Thispreventsatypeaheadbufferoverflowwhenthetypematicoperationacts.IntheATmode,thetypematicdelayandrepeatratecanbeprogrammable.Thisisdonebycommandfromhost.

‘N’keyrollisthenumberofkeysthatmaybehelddepressedsimultaneouslyandhavethekeyboardgeneratetheappropriatecodeforeachpressedandreleasedkeywithoutkeyboardinterruption.AllcombinationsofCtrl,AltandShiftkeysarenotghostkeys.
4.5Freefromillegalghostkeys
Keymatrixlayouthasbeenproperlymanagedsuchthatnoghostkeyoccursforanythreekeycombination.Theghostkeyisdefinedasthreekeycombinationwhereavalidthirdkeyfallsinthe‘#’patterninthekeymatrixformedbytheproceedingvalidtwokeycombination.Normallyinthiscase,thethirdkeywillbemaskedwithoutsendinganycodebecausethethirdkeyandfourthkeyinthis‘#’patternareconfusingthemicroprocessorofthekeyboard.Ifthethirdkeywasnotmaskedproperly,theghostkey—differentkeypresseshavingthesameelectricalconnectioninscanlinesandreturnlinesmatrix–willoccur.
