PennameofJeanBaptistePoquelin,FrenchsatiricalplaywrightfromwhommodernFrenchcomedydeveloped.OneofthefoundersoftheIllustreTheatre,hewaslateritsleadingactor.In1665hewrotehisfirstplayL’Etourdi(TheSaucebox),followedbyLesPrecieusesRidicules(ThePreciousYoungMaidens,1659).HissatiresincludeL’EcoledesFemmes(TheSchoolsforWives,1662),LeMisanthrope(TheMisanthrope,1666),LeBourgeoisGentihomme(TheBourgeoisGentleman,1670),andLeMaladeImaginaire(TheImaginaryInvalid,1673).莫里哀为笔名,他是法国的讽刺戏剧大师,现代戏剧的创始人。
