OnJuly7,1947,afarmerdiscoveredmysteriousmetallicdebris(金属碎片)inhisfarmoutsideRoswell,NewMexico.RoswellArmyAirField(RAAF)originallysaiditrecoveredaflyingdisc.Thenextday,RAAFchangeditswords:

Theobjectwasaweatherballoon.StoriesofaUFOandagovernmentcover-upspread.Eachyear,180,000peoplecheckoutthedirtfromtheUFOcrashsite,photos,andreportsabouttheRoswellincident.

Notallartiscreatedequal.Afterfindinganoilpaintingintherubbishin1993—thenowclassicLucyintheFieldwithFlowers—ScottWilsonstartedcollectingbadart.Beforelong,heshowedhisfindsattheSomervillemovietheater.TheMuseumofBadArt(MOBA)givesthepublicafirsthandlookatsomeoftheworld’sworst“disaster-pieces”.PopularpaintingsincludeManaLisa,HollywoodLips,andDrillingforEggs.“MOBAisalwaysonthelookoutforthebestoftheworst,”saidco-founderMarieJackson.“Butwhatanartistconsiderstobebaddoesn’talwaysmeetourlowstandards.”

In1858,Dr.ThomasDentMuttergavehiscollectionofpreservedbodyparts,andbonestotheCollegeOfPhysicianstoimprovemedicaleducation,whichledtothemuseum’screationin1863.Today,MutteristhemostfamousmedicalmuseuminAmerica,housingawallofbones,andpiecesofAlbertEinstein’sbrain.

Ithoughtweallknewwhyindependentschoolstudentsdobetterthanthoseinthestatesector(公立学校).Theyhavemoremoney,morefundingandbetterresourcesandtheydon’thavethemorechallengingstudentswegetinthestatesector.

ThatwasbeforeIbecameateacher-researcherinatwo-yearprojectledbymycollege,aimingtofindthebestwaytosupporthigh-abilitystudents.WithfundingfromtheLondonSchoolsExcellenceFund,weteamedupwithsomeofthecountry’stopprivateschools,likeEtonandStPaul’s,aswellasanumberofstateschools,tofindouthowtobringtheknowledge-richlearningthatcharacterizesindependentschoolsintothestatesector.

Beforetheproject,Ihadn’thadmuchcontactwithpeoplewhohadbeeneducatedthere.ButthefirstthingIfoundwhenIvisitedwasthatteachersarethesame.Intheindependentsector,theyhavechallengestoo—justdifferentones.

Aftertwoyears,ourresearchprojecthasproducedahugesetoffindings.

Oneofthemostusefulfindingswastheimportanceofindependentlearninghabitsoutsidetheclassroom.IrealizedthatalthoughIwasalwaystellingstudentsthattheyneededtodofourtofivehoursofprivatestudyaweek,theydidn’thaveaclearideaofwhatthiscouldlooklikebeyondmakingnotes.SoIsetthemdifferentactivitiesincludingreadingarticles,doingactivitiesandcompletingexaminationquestions.

Istartedtoputmuchmoreemphasisonactivitiesoutsidetheclassroom,likeresearchingtopicsbeyondthesyllabus(教学大纲)ordiscussingthingsinthenews.AndIpraisedanyonewhoaskedquestionsinclass,sowecreatedaculturewherestudentswereproudtoaskaquestionratherthanseeingitasawayofflaggingupthefactthattheyhadn’tunderstoodsomething.

Myresearchisbeginningtohavearealinfluence.Mystudentsnowcometoclassandtellmewhattheywanttoknowabout.Buttheynolongerexpectmetodotheresearch—theywanttofindoutforthemselves.AttheendoftheyearIgavestudentsaquestionnaireonindependentlearning.Onewrote,“IndependentlearningwouldlimitthehelpIgotfromotherstudents.Ithelpsyoutothinkforyourself.”
