Ithoughtweallknewwhyindependentschoolstudentsdobetterthanthoseinthestatesector(公立学校).Theyhavemoremoney,morefundingandbetterresourcesandtheydon’thavethemorechallengingstudentswegetinthestatesector.
ThatwasbeforeIbecameateacher-researcherinatwo-yearprojectledbymycollege,aimingtofindthebestwaytosupporthigh-abilitystudents.WithfundingfromtheLondonSchoolsExcellenceFund,weteamedupwithsomeofthecountry’stopprivateschools,likeEtonandStPaul’s,aswellasanumberofstateschools,tofindouthowtobringtheknowledge-richlearningthatcharacterizesindependentschoolsintothestatesector.
Beforetheproject,Ihadn’thadmuchcontactwithpeoplewhohadbeeneducatedthere.ButthefirstthingIfoundwhenIvisitedwasthatteachersarethesame.Intheindependentsector,theyhavechallengestoo—justdifferentones.
Aftertwoyears,ourresearchprojecthasproducedahugesetoffindings.
Oneofthemostusefulfindingswastheimportanceofindependentlearninghabitsoutsidetheclassroom.IrealizedthatalthoughIwasalwaystellingstudentsthattheyneededtodofourtofivehoursofprivatestudyaweek,theydidn’thaveaclearideaofwhatthiscouldlooklikebeyondmakingnotes.SoIsetthemdifferentactivitiesincludingreadingarticles,doingactivitiesandcompletingexaminationquestions.
Istartedtoputmuchmoreemphasisonactivitiesoutsidetheclassroom,likeresearchingtopicsbeyondthesyllabus(教学大纲)ordiscussingthingsinthenews.AndIpraisedanyonewhoaskedquestionsinclass,sowecreatedaculturewherestudentswereproudtoaskaquestionratherthanseeingitasawayofflaggingupthefactthattheyhadn’tunderstoodsomething.
Myresearchisbeginningtohavearealinfluence.Mystudentsnowcometoclassandtellmewhattheywanttoknowabout.Buttheynolongerexpectmetodotheresearch—theywanttofindoutforthemselves.AttheendoftheyearIgavestudentsaquestionnaireonindependentlearning.Onewrote,“IndependentlearningwouldlimitthehelpIgotfromotherstudents.Ithelpsyoutothinkforyourself.”
