OfcoursethemainrequirementofspeecheslikethisisthatI’msupposedtotalkaboutyourliberalartseducation’smeaning,totrytoexplainwhythedegreeyouareabouttoreceivehasactualhumanvalueinsteadofjustamaterialpayoff.
Solet’stalkaboutthesinglemostpervasivecliché
inthecommencementspeechgenre,whichisthataliberalartseducationisnotsomuchaboutfillingyouupwithknowledgeasitisaboutquoteteachingyouhowtothink.
Ifyou’relikemeasastudent,you’veneverlikedhearingthis,andyoutendtofeelabitinsultedbytheclaimthatyouneededanybodytoteachyouhowtothink,sincethefactthatyouevengotadmittedtoacollegethisgoodseemslikeproofthatyoualreadyknowhowtothink.
ButI’mgoingtoposittoyouthattheliberalartscliché

orautomaticallyabsorbedfromtheculture,likelanguage.
也就是说,这来自两个人心里的上的潜移默化,就像他的身高和脚码、是与生俱来的;

blindcertainty,aclose-mindednessthatamountstoanimprisonmentsototalthattheprisonerdoesn’tevenknowhe’slockedup.
ThepointhereisthatIthinkthisisonepartofwhatteachingmehowtothinkisreallysupposedtomean.Tobejustalittlelessarrogant.Tohavejustalittlecriticalawarenessaboutmyselfandmycertainties.BecauseahugepercentageofthestuffthatItendtobeautomaticallycertainofis,itturnsout,totallywronganddeluded.Ihavelearnedthisthehardway,asIpredictyougraduateswill,too.
HereisjustoneexampleofthetotalwrongnessofsomethingItendtobeautomaticallysureof:
