Dick’scarlefttheTraktonofficeandmadeitswayslowlyalongthedusty,bumpyroadleadingsouthintothecenterofMadras,towardshishome.EventhoughDickpassedthesebuildingseveryday,theyneverlosttheirfascinationforhim.Noonestyledominatedthiscityofcontrastswheremajesticbutneglectedcolonialbuildingsstoodnexttomodernglassandconcretebanks,slumhutsbuiltfrommudandroofedwithcoconutpalms,ramshacklegroupsofshopssellingeverythingfromusedcartyrestoIndia-madeforeignliquor…Andwherethetrafficwasachaosofcompetinganarchicallyforthefewovercrowdedspaceontheroads.Thejourneyhomewouldtakealongtime.vehicles

HehadarrivedthreeyearsearliertotakeoverasgeneralmanagerofTrakton'sfactoryinMadras.TraktonhadbeeninIndiasincebeforeIndependence.Ithadstartedoutmanufacturingmilitaryvehiclesduringthewarandswitchedtocommercialvehiclesandearth-movingequipmentwhenthewarended.Becauseofitskeyimportanceinhelpingtobuildthecountry'sindustrialbase,ithadnotbeencompletelytakenoverfollowingIndependence.
ThoughtheIndianoperationwastechnicallyindependent,Trakton'scorporateheadquartersinLondonstillhadoverallcontrol.Indiawas,ofcourse,onlyoneofthemanycountriesinwhichTraktonoperated.DickhadbeentransferredtoMadrasfromNigeriainfact,afteraseriesofotheroverseasappointments.Eachoftheoverseasfactorieshadageneralmanagerappointedfromheadquarterstooverseethemanagementofthelocalworkforce.InIndiathishadworkedparticularlywell.TheIndianstaffwashighly-trainedandefficient.Theywerealsogenerallyeasytoworkwith;thecompany'senlightenedindustrialrelationspolicyhadmadesureofthat.Salarieswerehigherthantheaverage;ther
