Theperceptionofisolation—fromothersofbeinginthesocialaspect—isnotonlyacauseofunhappiness,italsosignalsdanger.Fishhaveevolvedtoswimtothemiddleoftheirgroupwhenpredators(捕食者)approach,micehousedinsocialisolationshowsleepdisruptionsandreducedslow-wavesleepandprairievoles(田鼠)isolatedfromtheirpartnersthenplacedinanopenfieldexploretheirsurroundingslessandconcentrateonavoidingpredators.

Thesebehavioursreflectanincreasedemphasisonself-preservationinthesocialaspect.Forinstance,fishontheedgeofaschoolaremorelikelytobeattackedbypredatorsbecausetheyareeasiertoisolateandpreyupon.Suchobservationsreflectamoregeneralprinciplethatperceivedsocialisolationinsocialanimalsactivatesneural(神经系统的),neuroendocrine(神经内分泌的)andbehaviouralresponsesthatpromoteshort-termself-preservation.However,theseresponsesbringacostforlong-termhealthandwell-being.
