ItisgenerallyagreedthatGothicarchitecturemadeitsinitialappearance(c.1140)intheÎ

le-de-France,theroyaldomainoftheCapetiankings.However,theinceptionofthestyleowesmuchtoseveralgenerationsofpriorexperimentation,particularlyinNormandy(seeNormanarchitecture).AlthoughindividualcomponentsinGothicarchitecture,suchasribbedvaultingandthepointedarch,hadbeenemployedinRomanesqueconstruction,theyhadnotpreviouslyreceivedsuchapurposefulandconsistentapplication.WhilethestructuralvalueoftheGothicribhasbeencontested,itsformalsignificancecannotbeoverestimated.Itservedabovealltodelineatethevaultswithaskeletalwebthatgavetotheentirestructureanarticulationofimpressiveclarity.

UnlikeRomanesquearchitecture,withitsstressonheavymassesandclearlydelimitedareas,Gothicconstruction,particularlyinitslaterphase,ischaracterizedbylightnessandsoaringspaces.TheoveralleffectoftheGothiccathedralcombinedthislightnesswithaninnumerablesubdivisionandmultiplicityofforms.Theintroduction(c.1180)ofasystemofflyingbuttresses(seebuttress)madepossiblethereductionofwallsurfacesbyrelievingthemofpartoftheirstructuralfunction.Greatwindowscouldbesetintowalls,admittinglightthroughvastexpansesofstainedglass.WallsurfacesofHighGothicchurchesthushavetheappearanceoftransparentandweightlesscurtains.ThespiritualandmysteriousqualityoflightisanimportantelementofthereligioussymbolismofGothiccathedrals.
