Abstract

GonewiththewindisoneofthemostpopularAmericannovels.ItwaswrittenbyAmericanfemalewriterMargaretMitchell.ThisnovelmainlydescribesthelifeofScarlettwhoisTarafarmer’sdaughteraroundtheAmericanCivilWar.Scarletisoneoftheimpressiveimagesinworldliterature.Hercharmliesinthespritofrebellion.ThisarticleaimsatcommentingonScarlett’sburningrebellionagainsttraditionalcivilization,lifestyle,andtheideasofmarriage.Also,itanalysesthecausesofherrebellionandthesignificanceofherrebelliousspirit.

摘要:

《飘》这部经久不衰的作品是美国女作家玛格丽特·

米切尔创作的一部长篇小说。

小说以贯穿整个美国南北战争时期为背景,着重描述了思佳丽——塔拉农场主的女儿在战争前后的生活。

思佳丽是世界文学中最具她的魅力在于她的反叛精神。

本文旨在评述思佳丽在文明更替中对旧文明、生存方式、婚姻观念的火辣反叛及其成因和意义。

IIntroduction

MargaretMitchell(November8,1900–August16,1949)wastheAmericanauthor,whowonthePulitzerPrizein1937forherimmenselysuccessfulnovel.GonewiththeWind,whichwaspublishedin1936.Thenovelisoneofthemostpopularbooksofalltime,sellingmorecopiesthananyotherhardcoverbooks,apartfromtheBible.ThenovelmainlydescribesthelifeofScarlettwhoisthedaughterofTara’smasteraroundtheAmericanCivilWar.MeanwhilewiththehintofatriangularlovebetweenScarlett,AshleyandRhett,thenoveldepictsawideandprosperouspictureofthesociallifeoftheSouthinAmerica.Animportantelementofthestory’spopularityisScarlettO’Hara,theoutstandingheroinewhoisfullofrebelliousspirit.ThisarticleanalysesScarlett’sburningrebellionagainsttraditionalcivilization,lifestyleandtheconceptofmarriage.Anditalsoanalysesthecausesofherrebellionandthesignificanceofherrebelliousspirit.

IIScarlett’srebelliontotraditionalcivilization

Ingonewiththewind,whatScarlettsaid,behavedandthoughtdidn’taccordwiththetraditionalcivilizationstandards,soshewasnotpopularinhertimes.EspeciallywhatmadethemannoyedwasthatsherebelledagainstSouthernholyandinviolatecivilization.

1.Breakingtraditionalmoralityconcept.

ScarlettwastheladyofTara.Shewasdemandedtocomplywithallthemoralitynorms.Theconstraintofmoralityinfuriatedherandmadeherresistit.Italsoresultedinherpursuitofpersonalityandfreedom.Atthebeginning,sherebelledagainsttraditionalmorality,andwithtimegoingonherrebellionbecomemoreandmorefiercerandstronger.

BeforethecivilwarofAmerica,Scarlettmainlyresistedtheeducationoffamilyfairlady.Hermothertoldherthatheshouldbegentleandsoft.Motheralsowarnedherthatyoungladyshouldbesoft-spokenandsubmissive.Intheetiquettewomenshouldcatermen’sopinions.If“youngmisseswhutfrownsan’pushesoutdeychinsan’says‘ahwill’an’‘ahwoan’mosgener’lydoanketchhusband,”asMammysaid.(MargaretMitchell,2001)Besidesawoman’swords,deedsandclothesshouldalsoaccordwithgentlewomen’sstandards.Butscarletneverlearnedthisfromherheartbecauseshedidn’tfindthereasontolearnthisinherheart.SowhenStuartandBrenttalkedaboutwars,shemadeamouthofboredimpatienceanddeclared,“Ifyousay‘war’justoncemore,I’llgointhehouseandshutthedoor.”(MargaretMitchell,2001)shenotonlydidn’tcatertomenbutalsoinvolvedintheirwordsanddeeds.Sheexpressedherboredomandimpatience.Inchoosingplaymatesatchildhood,shedidn’tplaywithhertwosistersorthedaughtersofwell-bredWilkesbutplayedwiththeboysoftheneighborhoodandlittleblackboysonthefarm.Andshecouldridehorsesandclimbtreesalmostaswellasthem.Whatsocalledgentleandsoftwassweptcleanaway.Besidesshedevelopedanenduringwartowardsthegentlewomen’seducationthathadlongdepressedwomen’spersonality.BeforeshetookthepartyintheTwelveOaks,shequarreledwithMammyaboutwhichclothessheshouldwearinthemorning.AndshesaidtoMammythatshehadtiredofeverlastingbeingunnaturalandneverdoinganythingshewantedtodo.Shehadtiredofacinglikeshedidn’teatmorethanabird,andwalkingwhenshewantedtorunandsayingshefeltfaintafterawaltz…shehadtiredofpretendingshedidn’tknowanything,somencantellherthingsandfeltimportantwhiletheyweredoingit.(MargaretMitchell,2001)Somedayshe’sgoingtodoandsayeverythingshewantedtodoandsay.Shedidn’tcareifpeoplelikeitornot.(MargaretMitchell,2001)Alltheseshockingwordsanddeedsobviouslybreakupthegentlewomen’seducationthatshereceived.

Whenscarletwasnolongeragirl,shesoonrebelledwomen’svirtuesofthesouthandfeudalcodeofethics.Shebecameadissolutewomaninother’seyes.Duringthewar,thepolitics,economyandcultureweredestroying.Scarletrebelledagainsttraditionalmoralityinalargerscale.Italsoledthatshegotmorereproachesfromothers.Atthebeginningofcivilwar,herhusbandCharlesdied.Fromayoungmarriedwomanshebecameawidow.Accordingtothesouthernwomenvirtues,allthehappinessofunmarriedgirlshadnothingtodowithher.Eventhoughshewasonlyseventhandgotmarriedonlyfortwoweeksandlivedwithherhusbandforoneweek.Whatshecouldonlydowastofollowtherulesofwidowsquietly.Shehadtobegraveandaloof.Whenothergirlsweredancing,shecouldonlywatchthem;

whenothergirlsflirtedwithmen,shehadtospeaktomeninadepressedlowvoiceandwitheyeslookingdown;

whenothergirlsworebeautifulclothes,shedressedlikeacow…Alltheseetiquettethatshewasforcedtostandfastinthesouthirritatedher.Sheraisedhervoiceagainstunfairnessandstruggledwiththesefemalevirtuestopursuithumanpleasureswithoutthecontroloffeudalcodeofethics.Eventhoughshewasawidow,sheacceptedRhett’sinvitationsanddancedwithhiminpublicwithoutconsideringother’sgossip.SheevengladlyacceptedRhett’svaluableandbeautifulgreenhat.Thisnodoubtwasadoublestriketothetraditionalmorality---breakingtherulesthatwidowcouldonlywearmourningclothes,andgentlewomen’seducationthatwomencouldn’tacceptanyexpensivepresentfrommen.Intherebuildingafterwar,Scarlett’swordsanddeedsthatagainstfemalevirtueswassofrightfulthatevenshethoughtshewasluckythathermotherwasdead.Hermothernolongercouldseeherthesebehaviors.Hermothertoldhertotakegoodcareofblackslavesandsheshouldberesponsiblefortheirhealthandmorality.Sheshouldbethemodelforthem.ButwhenPorkstolefoodforthefamily,shedidn’tblameorpunishhim.Otherwiseshetoldhimtobecarefulandevengavehimherfather’swatchasareward.Shealsopromised“yourememberIsaidIwasgoingtogiveyouawatchforbeingsofaithful”(MargaretMitchell,2001)Whilehermodelwastogetwhatshewantedatanycostandusingallkindsofmethods.InordertoraisetaxforTara,sheevenproposedtobeRhett’smistressandluredFrank---hersister’sloverintomarringwithhersothatshecouldgetmoneyshebadlyneeded.Peoplewillcastthesedeedseveninmodernsocietyaside,andtheywerealsothetabooofcivilizationinhersociety.Butshedidn’tfeeluneasy.AsFrankthought,womenshouldpaytheirattentiontotheirfamiliesandfamilymembers.ButScarlettputallherenergyandtimeonrunningherowntimbermill.Whenwithoutcompanywenttothemillwithher,shedrovethecartbyherself.Shehiredcriminalstoworkinhermill.Sheraisedamortgageonherlittlemoneyandmademoneybytradingwithblackmen.Shegotmoneyfromorphans,widowsandilliteratemen.WhenshecausedFranktodeath,sheshouldhavefeltguiltyandlivedinwidowhoodallherlife.ButshesoonmarriedwithRhettinashorttime.Asshesaidthat“IknowI’mnotasscrupulousasIshouldbethesedays.NotaskindandaspleasantasIwasbroughtuptobe…IhavefeltthatIwastryingtokeepafloatthatIcouldn’tbebotheredaboutthingsthatdidn’tmatter…”(MargaretMitchell,2001)Thesethingsalsoincludedpride,honor,truth,virtuesandkindnessthatthesouthernerswouldholdfasttotheirdeath.Theywouldn’tgiveup.ButinScarlett’sopinion,thesethingswerethemostuselessandmustbeabandoned.Soshegotridofthetieoffemalevirtuesandbrokeconstrainoffeudalcodeofethics.Fromthenon,hejustdidthingsasherwillingness.

InScarlett’seyes,itwasunworthytodoanythingharmfultoherpleasures.Whenthewarbroughtfrom“doctrine”disturbedherlife,shedisdainedgreatcause.Intheeyeofothers,“doctrine”wasgreatandholyandwasundefeated.Theycoulddefyalldifficultiesanddangerevensacrificetheirlives.ButScarlettbecamethestrongestrebeltothegreatcause.Theonlypointthatshedidn’thatewasthatshecouldreappearatthepartyandflir
