1.ThisisamostcontroversialissuewhichisbeingheatedlydebatedinpresentChina.Asshowninthecartoon,anoldladywaslyingonthegroundsickorinjured.Amannearbywashesitatingwhethertohelphertogetupornot.Hefelttornbetweenhisconsciencetoofferhishandandhisfearofgettinginvolvedinatrouble.Obviously,thedrawerofthispictureintendstodrawourattentiontotheissueconfrontingeveryChinese:

inthesamesituation,wouldyouhelpornot?

Differentviewshavebeenpresentedaboutthisissue.Somepeoplearguethatoneshouldgivehelptothoseintroublewithouthesitation.Theyinsistthatofferinghelptoothersisnotjustamatterofconscience,butanessentialvirtueofhumanity.Shouldeveryonebeindifferenttothoseindifficultyorindisaster,oursocietywouldbeacoldplacewithoutloveorcare,asvividlyshowninthenewsstoryabout“XiaoYueYue”.Peoplewouldneverfeelwarmorhappyinsuchasociety.However,othersclaimthatoneshouldleavethosepoorindividualsalone.Intheireyes,everyonehashisownthingstoworryinthistimeofmaddeningcompetition,andhehasnotimeorenergylefttoofferhelptoothers.Therefore,itiseveryone’sdutytotakegoodcareofhimself,orhewillinevitablybeforgottenbytheworld.AndtheseassumptionsarefurtherstrengthenedbysomerecentincidentshappeninginChina:

someindividualsfindthemselvescaughtintroubleallbecauseoftheirgoodintentionstohelpsickorinjuredoldwomen.

Frankly,Idon’tagreewiththeviewthateveryoneshouldtakegoodcareofhimselfandthat’senough.Inmyopinion,helpinghthoseindifficultywithloveandcareisanindispensablevirtueofhumanity,anditisavaluewhichshouldbepraisedandkeptupinoursociety.Therefore,myconclusionisthattomakeoursocietyawarmandharmoniousplacetolivein,pleasedon’thesitatetoofferyourhelptoothers.

Thesetwopicturesdescriberegretablescenes.Intheleftpicture,amanwhoisdressedpoorlybutlivesinfavorableprimitivesurroundingswithtrees,flowers,freshair,waterandbeautifulsunshine,complainsthatheisunhappy.Bewilderinglyenough,themaninthesecondpicture,whoisapparentlylivinginthemodernagewithelectriclamps,TVset,computer,carandaeroplane,stillclaimsthatheisunhappy.Sowhatonearthdoesitneedtomakeamanfeelhappy?

Clearly,thedrawerofthesecartoonswishestorevealtheproblemofunhappinessinthepresentworld,particularlyinChina.

Manyreasonshavebeenlistedasleadtothiswide-spreadunhappinessinChina,butinmyopinion,highpressureandinsatiableneedsarethetwoprimaryfactorscontributingtothisproblem.Generallyspeaking,fromthemomenttheyareborn,Chinesepeoplewillbeputinastressfulandstrainedenvironmentwherecompetitioncanbedenotedasthekeywordfortheirdailylife.Theyhavetocompeteagainstallotherstobeadmittedintoaselectivehighschoolandthentoarenowneduniversity,toobtainawell-paidjobwithidealworkingconditions,andtogetanearlierpromotion,etc.Andarethewinnersofthesecompetitionshappy?

No,becausetheyarenotfullysatisfiedwithwhatthey’vegot.Theythinktheyarecapableofobtainingmore.Theywanttoreachahigherleveloflife,whichtheythinkshouldbereachableiftheytry.This,however,inevitablyinvolvestheminanotherroundofcompetition,whichformsaviciouscycleandmaybringadverseeffectstotherestoftheirlives.Withalloftheseburdens,thereisnowonderthatChinesepeoplearenothappy.

Asstatedabove,highpressureandtheinsatiableneedsarethetwocontributionstotheproblemofwhyChinesepeopleareunhappy.IfChinesepeoplewanttoreversethesituationandpromotehappiness,theycanchangethemselveswithregardtothesetwoaspects.

Thispictureisreallythought-provoking.Itisabalance,withoneofthescalescontaining“efforts”andtheothercontaining“results”.Evidently,themessagethatthedrawerofthispicturewantstoconveytousisthatlifeisjustlikethisbalance,acertainamountofeffortswillberewardedwiththecorrespondingamountofachievements.Nomore,andnoless.

Theimplicationsofthispictureareclear:

everyonemayhavesetagoalforhislife,butonlythosewhomakethegreatesteffortscanachievehisgoal.Theamountoftimeandenergythatonedevotestohisgoalisdirectlyrelatedtohowmuchhemayexpecttogetinreturn.Whenwewatchaworld-classmusicianoratopathlete,wedon’tseetheyearsofpreparationthatenabledhimorhertobecomegreat.TheMichaelJordansoftheworldhavetalent,yes,butthey’realsothefirstonesonandthelastonesoffthebasketballcourt.TheLanglangsoftheworldaresoimpressiveandadmirableinthelimelight,yetfewpeopledonoticethoseyearsofdifficult,tiringandboringpracticebehindtheirdazzlingsuccessasworld-classmusicians.Thesamepreparationappliesineveryformofhumanendeavor.Ifyouhaveadreamoranambition,youhavetoworkhardtomakeitcometrue. 

 

Tosumup,everyonemayhavehisdreamsinlife,andhemustkeepinmindthatit’seasiertohaveanambitionthantoworkhardtofulfillit.Onlywhenonehasmadesufficienteffortscanheexpecttogetsatisfyingrewards.

Asdepictedinthepicture,ayoungmanisrunningforward,inspiteofthestrongwindandalikelystorm.Heknowsthatifhedoesn’tmoveahead,hewillcertainlyfailtoachievehisgoal.Theotheryoungman,bycontrast,dozesoffonthesofa,daydeaming.Heprobablythinksitunwisetomoveonwhenthereisastormloomingahead.Evidently,themessagethatthedrawerofthispicturewantstoconveytousisthatnothingventure,nothinggain.

Therightnessofthisnotionhasbeenprovednumeroustimes.TakeChristopherColumbusforexample.Despiteallthehardshipsandchallenges,heandhisfleetventuredintotheocean,theunknown.ThenhefoundtheAmerica,theNewWorld,aseverybodyknows,andintroducedittotheworld.Andinthefollowingcenturies,millionsofimmigrantscametosettlethenewlandandbuiltupwhatisnowtheUnitedStatesofAmerica.Becauseofhisventures,hemadehistory.Likewise,whenMaYun,afamousChineseentrepreneur,foundedhisAin1999,hecertainlyknewhewastakingahugerisk,forB2BmarketplaceonlinewasabsolutelyanewareaofbusinessinChinaatthattime.Buthepersistedandhemadeit.Withoutthecouragetotakingrisks,ambitionsorachievementswillonlybeatotalimpossibility.

Ascanbeseenclearlyfromtheabovetalk,wemaydrawtheconclusionthatavoidanceofrisksismoredangerousthantakingrisks.AndIfirmlybelievethatanyonewhowishestobeasuccessfulmanorwomanwillhavetopossessthespiritofventure.

Thisissurelyaregrettablescene.Ateacherisgivingalecturetoherstudents.Whensheasksherstudentswhattheirlifeambitionis,therepliesareastonishinglythesame:

sleep.Lookingclosely,onemayfindthatallthestudents,atayoungage,areallwearingapairofglasses,andontheirdesksarepilesofbooks.Clearly,thedrawerofthiscartoonwishestorevealtheproblemofhugeburdensonChinesestudents.

Thereasonsbehindthisproblemareobvious.Astheschoolteachersandtheparentsknow,competitionismaddeningamongthekids.Ifthekidswishtobeadmittedintothebestschoolsoruniversities,theyhavetoworkextrahardand“burnthemid-nightoil”.Asaresult,theparentsandteachersareextremelystrictwiththechildren.Theywillmakesurethatthekidslistentotheteachersattentivelyinclassanddotheirhomeworkproperlyafterschool.Andinmostcases,parentswillsendtheirkidstomanydifferentkindsoftrainingclassesafterschoolsothattheirkidscanlearnmoreandachievehigherscoresthanotherkids.ItisreallyregrettablethatChinesekidsgrowupinsuchamiserablestate.It’snotjustthattheireyesandhealthsufferalot,butthattheyloseahappychildhood,whichisusuallysupposedtobethehappiesttimeofone’slife.PoorkidsinChina.

It’sreallyhightimeforustosolvethisproblem.Ononehand,thegovernmentshouldreassessitspoliciesofeducation.Ontheotherhand,thepublic,includingboththeteachersandtheparents,shouldreexaminetheirexpectationsofthechildren.Onlyinthiswaycanweexpecttogiveourchildrenamosthappychildhoodandletthemgrowupnaturally.

Itisaparadox.WhilethedevelopmentofspacetechnologyprovidesushumanbeingswithabetterunderstandingofourEarthandtheuniverse,itissendingthousandsoftonsofjunkintotheplanet’sorbits,circlingtheearth.Allthisjunkposesaseriousthreattotheexistenceoflifeontheearth.Obviously,thedrawerofthispictureintendsustoreexamineboththebenefitsandcoststhatscienceandtechnology,includingspacetechnology,havebroughttohumans.

Admittedly,theadvancementofscienceandtechnologyhaschangedhumanlifeenormouslyandpositively.Theuseoftechnologyinagriculturehasincreasedourproductivitysothatmorepeoplearefedandclothed.Doingworkatworkplacesismorecomfortablebecauseofinventionofallsortsofmachines.Developmentoftechnologyinkitchenshasrelievedhousewivesofboringandtiringhouseworkandbroughtthemmoreleisure.Airplanesmaycarrypeopletotheothersideoftheearthtovisitfriendsorseethesceneriesinamatterofhours.AndtheemergenceofcomputersandtheInternetmakespeople’slifemoreconvenientandcolorful.However,manyotherswouldliketostopthesechangesandgobacktowhattheyseeasapurerandsimplerage.Theyinsistthatprogressinscienceand
