smostexclusiveschools.GatessoonbefriendedastudentnamedPaulAllenandtogether,usingtheschoolsminicomputer,theypracticedtheirskills.
AftertheywereadmittedtoHarvardUniversity,GatesandAllenbegantowriteanewversionofBasicprogramminglanguageforthefirstpersonalcomputer,theAltair8800.TheduobeganlicensingsoftwareinthenameoftheirnewcompanyMicrosoft.GatesdroppedoutofHarvardtospendmoretimeonthenewbusiness.
TheirbreakcamewhentheydevelopedanoperatingsystemcalledMS-DOSforthefirstIBMpersonalcomputer,andlatermanagedtopersuadeothermanufacturestostandardizetheirsystemstorunMS-DOS.Thisstandardizationstartedanewcomputerindustryboomthroughoutthe1980sasMS-DOStookholdofthemarketandgainedpopularity,Microsoftalsostarteddevelopingapplicationssuchaswordprocessors.
MicrosoftannouncedWindows1.0in1983,whichpromisedagraphicaluserinterface(GUI)graphicsandmultitasking.Howeverthefinalproductwasnotreleasedforanothertwoyearsuntil1985,andasithadveryfewcompatibleapplications,Windowsdidnotsellwell.
OverthenextfiveyearsMicrosoftreleasedanumberofupgradedwindows2.0versionswhichaddedmanyprograms,versatilityandfeatures.AsMicrosoftgrew,itssharepriceskyrocketed,andattheageof31,BillGatesbecametheyoungestself-madebillionaireinAmericanhistory.
In1990MicrosoftheadedbyGatescreatedanewversionofWindowscalledWindows3.0withamuchimprovedGUIandfeatureswhichsoldmorethan10millioncopies,quicklyfollowedbyWindows3.1,3.11andworkgroupswhichaddednetworkingsupport.BuildingontheirsuccessMicrosoftdevelopedWindows95followedbywindows98,2000,MillenniumEditionandThecurrentversionWindowsXP.EachnewwindowsreleasesawMicrosoftgainmoremarketshareandsoonGatesbecometherichestmanintheworldworthanestimatedUS$46billion.
GatesalsohasinterestsinotherbusinesseshavingmanyinvestmentsandpositionsincompanieslikeCorbisCorporation,BerkshireHathawayInc.,TeledesicCorporation.In1998GatesgaveuphisroleasCEOofMicrosofttofocusondevelopmentofnewtechnologyandproducts.
BillGatesmarriedMelindaFrenchin1994andtheyhavethreechildren,Jennifer,RoryandPhoebe.BothBillandMelindaarekeenPhilanthropistsstartingtheBillandMelindaGatesFoundationwhichhascommittedmorethanUS$3.2billiontoglobalhealth,US$2billiontoimprovelearningopportunitiesforlowincomefamilies,US$477milliontocommunityprojectsandmorethanUS$488milliontospecialprojectsandannualgivingcampaigns.
