Thenovel“TheJoyLuckClub”,writtenbyAmyTan,publishedin1989,dealswiththestoriesoffourChinesewomenwhoimmigratedtoSanFrancisco,USAinthe1940’saswellaswiththestoriesoftheirfourAmerican-borndaughters.Atadeeperlevel,AmyTan’snovelisaboutthedifferentmother-daughterrelationshipsbetweenthemaincharactersandaboutrelationshipsbetweenfriends,loversandevenenemies.

Thenovelisdividedintofoursections,inwhichthemothersanddaughtersaretellingabouttheirlives.Thereadergetstoknowaboutthemothers’tragicpastinpre-1949China,andhowtheyhadtobuildupanewexistenceinCalifornia,USA.Afterhavingmeteachothertheydecidetosetupthe“JoyLuckClub”.ThemothersmeeteachotherweeklytoplayaChinesegamenamedmah-jongg,sharingtheirindividualexperiencesinlifeandhopingtoovercometheirpast.Butasthenovelcontinues,itbecomesobviousthatthefourdaughtersdon’thaveeasierlivesthantheirmothershad.LivingintheUSAasyoungAmerican-Chinesewomen,theygetconfrontedwiththeirconflictingethnicalandculturalbackgroundeverydayandtheyhavetofightforemancipationinlife.Theyaretryingtolivelikemodern,self-confidentwomen,withoutpayinganyattentiontotheirculturalbackground.Butafteryearsofbolddreamsofwealthandhigh-paidjobs,everydayquarrelswiththeirmothers,Americanloversandhusbands,andtimesoffearandinsecurity,thefourdaughtersseemtorealizetheiruniquechanceofbeingattachedtotwodifferentculturesinaverypersonalway.Therefore,thenovelisalsoabouttheprocessoffindingone’sownidentity.

2.TheAmericanDream

ThetermwasfirstusedbyJamesTruslowAdamsinhisbookTheEpicofAmerica,whichwaswrittenin1931.Accordingtohim,theAmericanDreamis“thatdreamofalandinwhichlifeshouldbebetterandricherandfullerforeveryone,withopportunityforeachaccordingtoabilityorachievement.ItisadifficultdreamfortheEuropeanupperclassestointerpretadequately,andtoomanyofusourselveshavegrownwearyandmistrustfulofit.Itisnotadreamofmotorcarsandhighwagesmerely,butadreamofsocialorderinwhicheachmanandeachwomanshallbeabletoattaintothefulleststatureofwhichtheyareinnatelycapable,andberecognizedbyothersforwhattheyare,regardlessofthefortuitouscircumstancesofbirthorposition.”(Page214—215)
