About20similarglaciersaroundtheGulfofAlaskaareheadingtowardthe

sea.Ifenoughsurgeglaciersreachtheoceanandraisesealevels,west

Antarcticiceshelvescouldriseofftheseafloorandbecomeadrift.Afloodof

icewouldthensurgeintotheSouthernSea.Withthecontinuedriseinsea

level,moreicewouldplungeintotheocean,causingsealevelstoriseeven

higher,whichinturnwouldreleasemoreiceandsetinmotionaviciouscycle.

TheadditionalseaicefloatingtowardthetropicswouldincreaseEarthsalbedo

andlowerglobaltemperatures,perhapsenoughtoinitiateanewiceage.This

situationappearstohaveoccurredattheendofthelastwarminterglacial(the
