theAnglo-SaxonperiodandtheAnglo-Normanperiod.

Inthe7th,thethreetribesmixedintoawholepeoplecalledEnglishandthelanguagespokenbythemisgenerallycalledAnglo-Saxon,thatistheOldEnglish.

Themainliteraryformoftheperiodispoetryandtherearetwogroups:

paganpoetryandreligiouspoetry,andoftenChristianone.

ThemostimportantworksleftisBeowulf《贝奥武甫》or《贝尔武夫》

ItistheearliestcompleteepicinEnglishliteratureanditisregardedasthenationalepicoftheEnglishpeople.

ThetermRenaissanceoriginallyindicatesarevivalorrebirthofancientGreekandRomanartsandsciencesafterthedarkagesofmedievalobscurantism.Indeed,agreatnumberoftheworksofclassicalauthorsweretranslatedintoEnglishduringthe16thcentury.Thestudyandpropagationofclassicallearningandartwascarriedonbytheprogressivethinkersofthehumanists.Theyheldtheirchiefinterestnotinecclesiasticalknowledge,butinman,hisenvironmentanddoingsandbravelyfoughtfortheemancipationofmanfromthetyrannyofthechurchandreligiousdogmas.
