In1960JohnF.KennedybecamethefirstRomanCatholicelectedtotheUnitedStatespresidency.Duringthecampaignhisreligionbecameanissuebecausesomepeoplefearedthat,onceinoffice,hisallegiance（忠贞）tohischurchmightdeterminehisconductofpublicpolicy.Twomonthsbeforetheelection,Kennedydiscussedthisfearinanaddressinwhichhesaid,“IbelieveinanAmericawheretheseparationofchurchandstateisabsolute－wherenoCatholicprelatewouldtellthePresident,shouldhebeaCatholic,howtoact,andnoProtestantministerwouldtellhisparishionersforwhomtovote.”

IntheUnitedStatesthesituationisthereverse.Theconstitutionspecifiesaseparationofchurchandstateforthemutualbenefitofeach.
