Introduction“Inthelastyears,thefieldofsecondlanguageacquisitionhasseenthereemergenceofinterestinoneoflanguagestudy,vocabulary,andtheappearanceofanewlyrecognizedaspectlearnerstrategieshasattractedanoticeablelackofattention”(Meare).Theresearch,whichhasbeendoneonvocabularylearningstrategies,hastendedtodealwithindividualorsmallnumbersofstrategies,withverylimitedlookingatthegroupasawhole.However,withmypersonalexperience,somewordsdogivemeintenseimpressionsandoccupiedmymemorypermanentlyevenifIhaveseenthemonce.HereIwanttoindicatethatmostofthesewordsarereadfromstories,typicallyfromGreekMythology,whichisconsideredtobetheoriginofEnglishliterature.IwouldliketocallthelongorshortmythsfromwhichImasteredwordsfirmly“carriers”.Thisarticlewillfirstoverviewsomegeneralconclusionsaboutvocabularylearningstrategies,whichcanbemadepriortostrategyresearch.Then,carriersinforeignlanguagevocabularylearningwillbeproposedandthemnemonicmethodsenlightenedbywordsfromGreekMythologydiscussedinmoredetail.Finally,theoreticalaspectsofcarriersusedwillbeanalyzed.MnemonicmethodsenlightenedbywordsfromGreekMythologyGreekmythologyanditslinguisticinfluenceEverybodyknowsthatthemythstoldbytheGreeksandRomansareasimportantashistoryforourunderstandingofwhatthosepeoples,ancestorsofourowncivilization,believedandthoughtandfelt,andexpressedinwritingandinvisualart.Fortheirmythologieswereinextricablyinterwoven,withthewholefabricoftheirpublicandprivatelives.Andthenwithoutthesemyths,itwouldbehardforustounderstandtheartsandliteratureandwaysofthinkingofthewest,andofmanyotherpartsoftheworldaswell,duringthecenturiesthathavepassedsincetheclassicalworldcametoanend.Timeaftertimetheseproductsofancientimaginationhavebeenusedtoinspirefreshcreativeefforts,whichamounttoasubstantialpartofourwholeculturalinheritance.Suchrenewalsandadaptationshaveoftenseemedfarremoved,fromtheoriginaltraditionincharacterandspirit,yettheystemdirectlyfromit,andareunimaginablewithoutit.Eachmythmeanssomethingdifferenttoeverybodywhoreadsandstudiesit.Thestoriesarehardtoforget,feelingsaboutthemcomeunpredictably.Theirunderlyingqualitiesdonoteasilyyieldtodefinitionorclassificationandstilllesstoweirdsearches.Aboveall,Mythology’sinfluenceisevidentinourlanguage.Itishardtoimaginereadingorwritingwithoutdrawinguponmythorientedadjectivesoridioms.Therefore,wordsfromGreekmythologyenlightenedmewithsomemethodstostrengthenvocabularylearning,suchaspictureorimageryandgrouping.CategoriesofmnemonicmethodsPicture/Imagery Thisisawayofrememberingsomewords,whichmanystudentsfindeffective.Occasionallythereisawordthatyouhavemetbeforewhichisonthetipofyourtonguebutyoujustcannotrememberit.Itmaybeawordthatseemsdifficulttoremember,orone,whichyouhaveseenmanytimesbutstillcannotrememberattherighttime.Thinkofawordinyourownlanguagethatsoundssimilar,oriftheEnglishwordislonginspelling,chooseawordinyourownlanguagethatsoundsthesameasthefirstpartoftheEnglishone.Youshouldthenformapictureinwhichthetwowordsinteract.Imagine,forexample:
