SanteFe,NewMexicomultimillionaireForrestFennhasalwayslovedagoodadventure.Asasmallchildbeforeeight,heandhisbrother,SkippyspentsummervacationsmakingexplorationinYellowstoneNationalPark.

Asateen,FennidolizedthedecoratedWorldWarⅡfighterpilot,calledRobinOldsandlatteremulatedhisheroduringtheVietnamWarasanAirfighterpilottogotoNewMexicoandsettledthereasanartsandantiquesdealer,huntingdownvaluablepaintings,rugs,warmemorabilia,andotherantiquetosell.

In1998,Fennwasdiagnosedwithterminalkidneycancer.Ashehadalwaysbeendoing,heconceivedagrandadventurethatheassumedwouldbehislastone.“Iwantedtocreatesomeexcitement,somehope,beforeIdied,”saysFenn,82,addingthathealsowantedto“getkidsoutofthegameroomandoffthecouch.”Withthoseideasinhismind,hestartedtodeviseatreasurehunt.

TheAncientGreekphilosopherPythagorasisbestknowntodayforhismathematicaltheorem,whichhauntsthedreamsofmanygeometrystudents,butforcenturieshewasalsocelebratedasthefatherofvegetarianism.Ameatlessdietwasreferredtoasa“Pythagoreandiet”foryears,upuntilthemodernvegetarianmovementbeganinthemid-1800s.

WhilePythagoraswasanearlyproponentofameatlessdiet,humanshavebeenvegetarianssincewellbeforerecordedhistory.Mostanthropologistsagreethatearlyhumanswouldhaveeatenapredominantlyplant-baseddiet;

afterall,plantscan’trunaway.Additionally,ourdigestivesystemsresemblethoseofherbivorescloserthancarnivorousanimals.Prehistoricmanatemeat,ofcourse,butplantsformedthebasisofhisdiet.

Pythagorasandhismanyfollowerspracticedvegetarianismforseveralreasons,mainlyduetoreligiousandethicalobjections.Pythagorasbelievedalllivingbeingshadsouls.Animalswerenoexception,someatandfishwerebanishedfromhistable.Strangelyenough,healsobanishedavegetablethathasaplaceofhonoronmostvegetarianmenustoday,thehumblebean.Hisfollowerswereforbiddentoeatoreventouchbeans,becausehethoughtbeansandhumanswerecreatedfromthesamematerial.Favabeanswereespeciallybad,astheyhavehollowsteamsthatcouldallowthesoulsofthedeadtotravelupfromthesoilintothegrowingbeans.

WhiletheedictagainstbeanswasliftednotlongafterPythagoras’death,hisfollowerscontinuedtoeatameatlessdiet.Hisprinciplesinfluencedgenerationsofacademicsandreligiousthinkers,anditwasagroupoftheselike-mindedindividualswhofoundedtheVegetarianSocietyinEnglishinthemid-1800s.Thevirtuesoftemperance,abstinenceandself-controlwerealltiedtovegetarianideals,whilelust,drunkennessandgeneralhooliganismallresultedfromadiettoorichinmeatproducts.NotableearlyvegetariansincludedLeoTolstoy,GeorgeBernardShaw,MahatmaGandhiandAmericanBronsonAlcott,aTranscendentalistteacher,reformerandthefatherof“LittleWomen”authorLouisaMayAlcott.
