Thepaper-basedGRErevisedGeneralTestcontainstwoAnalyticalWritingtasks,twoVerbalReasoningsectionsandtwoQuantitativeReasoningsections.

Totalstandardtestingtimeisapproximately3hoursand30minutes.Allreferencestotimingandbreaksinthisdocumentassumestandardtestingconditions.TestingaccommodationsapprovedbyEducationalTestingServicemayincludeadditionaltestingtimeand/oradditionalbreaktime.Thedirectionsatthebeginningofeachsectionspecifythetotalnumberofquestionsinthesectionandthestandardtimeallowedforthesection.TheAnalyticalWritingtasksarealwayspresentedfirst.

PreparingfortheGRErevisedGeneralTest

Preparationforthetestwilldependontheamountoftimeyouhaveavailableandyourpersonalpreferencesforhowtoprepare.Ataminimum,beforeyoutakethepaper-basedGRErevisedGeneralTest,youshouldknowwhattoexpectfromthetest,includingtheadministrativeprocedures,typesofquestionsanddirections,numberofquestionsandamountoftimeforeachsection.

BeforetakingthepracticerevisedGeneralTest,itisimportanttobecomefamiliarwiththecontentofeachofthemeasures.Inthispublication,youwillfindinformationspecifictoeachmeasureofthetest.Youcanusethisinformationtounderstandthetypeofmaterialonwhichyouwillbetestedandthequestiontypeswithineachmeasure.Determinewhichstrategiesworkbestforyou.Remember—youcandoverywellonthetestwithoutansweringeveryquestionineachsectioncorrectly.

Test-takingStrategies

AnalyticalWritingMeasure

Everyone—eventhemostpracticedandconfidentofwriters—shouldspendsometimepreparingfortheAnalyticalWritingmeasurebeforearrivingatthetestcenter.Itisimportanttounderstandtheskillsmeasuredandhowthetasksarescored.Itisalsousefultoreviewthescoringguides,sampletopics,scoredsampleessayresponsesandreadercommentaryforeachtask.

ThetasksintheAnalyticalWritingmeasurerelatetoabroadrangeofsubjects—fromthefineartsandhumanitiestothesocialandphysicalsciences—butnotaskrequiresspecificcontentknowledge.Infact,eachtaskhasbeentestedbyactualGREtesttakerstoensurethatitpossessesseveralimportantcharacteristics,includingthefollowing:

•GREtesttakers,regardlessoftheirfieldofstudyorspecialinterests,understoodthetaskandcouldeasilyrespondtoit.

•Thetaskelicitedthekindsofcomplexthinkingandpersuasivewritingthatuniversityfacultyconsiderimportantforsuccessingraduateschool.

•Theresponseswerevariedincontentandinthewaythewritersdevelopedtheirideas.

BeforetakingtheAnalyticalWritingmeasure,reviewthestrategies,sampletopics,essayresponsesandreadercommentaryforeachtaskcontainedinthisdocument.Alsoreviewthescoringguidesforeachtask.Thiswillgiveyouadeeperunderstandingofhowreadersevaluateessaysandtheelementsthey’relookingforinanessay.

Inthepaper-basedrevisedGeneralTest,thetopicsintheAnalyticalWritingmeasurewillbepresentedinthetestbook,andyouwillhandwriteyouressayresponsesinthetestbookinthespaceprovided.（Differentresponsemodes,suchastheuseofascribe,maybeapprovedasaccommodations.）

Itisimportanttobudgetyourtime.Withinthe30-minutetimelimitfortheIssuetask,youwillneedtoallowsufficienttimetoconsidertheissueandthespecificinstructions,planaresponseandcomposeyouressay.Withinthe30-minutetimelimitfortheArgumenttask,youwillneedtoallowsufficienttimetoconsidertheargumentandthespecificinstructions,planaresponseandcomposeyouressay.AlthoughtheGREreaderswhoscoreyouressaysunderstandthetimeconstraintsunderwhichyouwriteandwillconsideryourresponseafirstdraft,youstillwantittobethebestpossibleexampleofyourwritingthatyoucanproduceunderthetestingconditions.

Saveafewminutesattheendofeachtimedtasktocheckforobviouserrors.Althoughanoccasionalspellingorgrammaticalerrorwillnotaffectyourscore,severeandpersistenterrorswilldetractfromtheoveralleffectivenessofyourwritingandloweryourscoreaccordingly.

DuringtheactualadministrationoftherevisedGeneralTest,youmayworkonlyontheparticularwritingtaskthetestcentersupervisordesignatesandonlyforthetimeallowed.Youmaynotgobacktoanearliersectionofthetestafterthesupervisorannounces,“Pleasestopwork”forthattask.Thesupervisorisauthorizedtodismissyoufromthecenterfordoingso.

FollowingthesecondAnalyticalWritingsection,youwillhaveanopportunitytotakea10-minutebreak.

VerbalReasoningandQuantitativeReasoningMeasures

ThequestionsintheVerbalReasoningandQuantitativeReasoningmeasureshaveavarietyofformats.Somerequireyoutoselectasingleanswerchoice;

othersrequireyoutoselectoneormoreanswerchoices,andyetothersrequireyoutoenteranumericanswer.Makesurewhenansweringaquestionthatyouunderstandwhatresponseisrequired.CompleteinstructionsforansweringeachquestiontypeareincludedinthepracticetestafterthetwoAnalyticalWritingtasks.

WhentakingaVerbalReasoningorQuantitativeReasoningsection,youarefree,withinthatsection,toskipquestionsthatyoumighthavedifficultyansweringandcomebacktothemlaterduringthetimeprovidedtoworkonthatsection.Alsoduringthattimeyoumaychangetheanswertoanyquestioninthatsectionbyerasingitcompletelyandfillinginanalternativeanswer.Becarefulnottoleaveanystraymarksintheanswerarea,astheyma
