AUSTRALIANadultswanttosee“lifeskills”introducedintoschoolcurriculums,includingmoneymanagement,jobpreparationanddomestictasks.NewresearchfromMonashUniversityshowedAussieadultsalsowidelysupportedtheinclusionoftechnology,codingandartificialintelligencesubjectstostudentcurriculumstopreparethemforfuturejobs.
Co-authorProfessorNeilSelwyn,fromMonash’snewEducationFuturesthinktank,saidthesurveyresultsofmorethan2,000AustralianshadtakenhimselfandDrDeanaLeahybysurprise.“Thelifeskills—Iwasn’texpectingthatatall,”hesaid.Thosequizzedwereaskedtoratethevalueofalistofsubjectsalreadyinthecurriculum,butwerealsogivenanopenspacetowritewhattheythinkshouldbeincluded.Prof.Selwynsaidpeoplecalledforschoolstoteachfinancialskills,budgeting,cookinganddoingtaxes.“Youcouldarguethatthesearethingspeopleshouldbelearningthemselves,orlearningfromtheirfamilies,”Prof.Selwynsaid.“Butwe’vegottobethinkingforwardintermsoftheskillspeoplewillneedforjobsandtheirwaysofliving.”
Onerespondentsaidschoolsshouldintroducea“contemporarylifeskills”subject:
“Acompulsory1-houraweekclassonskillsneededthatparentsseemcontinuallyunabletoteachtheirkids.”Suggestionsfortheclassincludedresumewriting,filingtaxreturnsandhealthclaims.Anotherrespondentcalledforstudentstobetaught“generallifeskillsasunfortunatelynotenoughkidswillhaveparentstoactuallybebotheredtoeducatethemorsimplyparentsdon’tknowthemselves”.
Ofthesubjects,mathswasthehighestranked(75.5percent),followedcloselybyEnglish(74.8percent).Andwhilesciencewasthethirdhighestrankedsubject(46.2percent),itwasmorestronglysupportedbythosewhoearnedhigherwagesandwereuniversityeducatedcomparedtolowerincomeearners.
Aspectsofschoollifeconsideredleastimportantwerestudentshavingfun,learningaboutthingsthatinterestedthemandbeinggiventheopportunitytobecreative.
