seeingthebehind-the-scenesworkthatgoesintoproducingqualitylegislationgavemeadeeprespectforthegoodthatgovernmentcando,whenenabledbycapablepublicservants.Whenahigher-levelpositionopenedup,Iapplied.Imovedfast.Iwaspromotedrepeatedly,eventuallybecomingtheeditorialsupervisorintheOfficeoftheClerk.

butIwouldnot—andrequiresameticulousandanalyticalmind.SupervisingtheproductionofthelegalrecordoftheFloridaHouse,theJournal,demandsattentiontodetailnotcommoninmostofficework.Ihavefoundjoyintheprecisionofmywork,becoming

increasinglyfascinatedwiththeintricaciesoflegalwritingandresearch.Mymindhasalwaysbeenonegiventocuriosityandproblem-solving.Crosswordpuzzlesandwordgamesaloneoncesatedme;

asanadult,Ihavegrowntoappreciatestatutoryandconstitutionalpuzzlesfortheircomplexityandforthemerefactthattheremaybemultipleacceptablesolutions,ifthosesolutionsarearguedcompetently.Ihavecometounderstandthatonemayexpresscreativityandpassioninwaysthathavenothingtodowithart.

Mycreativewritingskillshavebeenputtogooduseinmycareer,however.In2006,whenClerk[xxxxx]retiredhispositionandtheOfficeoftheClerkwassplitintwoparts,myunitwasmovedandhousedunderthenewlycreatedOfficeoftheParliamentarian.ThelossofMr.[xxxxx]'

however,mynewworksituationcreatedanotheropportunityforme.Mynewdirectsupervisor,Parliamentarian[yyyyyyy],recognizedandemployedmyabilitytocommunicateideaseffectively.Heallowedmetoparticipateheavilyinthewritingofseveralpublications.ThemostdauntingoftheseisPrinciples,Practices&

AHandbookonParliamentaryPracticeintheFloridaHouseofRepresentatives,whichexploresnotonlythepracticesoftheLegislature,butalsotheintersectionstheLegislaturemustnecessarilyhavewiththeotherbranchesofFlorida'

sgovernment.Theprojectrequiredextensiveresearchandfact-checking,inadditiontowritingandediting,andthroughthisprocess,IexpandedmyunderstandingandappreciationoftheFloridaConstitution.CompletionofthePrinciplesbookwaspivotalformyprofessionalcareer,becausetheresearchIdidinordertofleshoutthisbookrevealedmydesiretoparticipatemorefullyintheprocessofgovernment.WhileIhadbegunmycareerwiththeFloridaHousein2003asarecentcollegegraduatejusttryingtogetapaycheckandblendin,by2006,alargerpicturehadstartedtoemergeandIbegantoseemyselfasavaluablepartofthatpicture.

Thestudyoflawrepresentsathree-wayintersectionatwhichtheexecutive,judicial,andlegislativebranchesofgovernmentmeet;

Iamdrawntothisconvergence.TobetterunderstandtheworkIhavebeendoingforthepastsixyears,Imustapproachthisworkfromadifferentangle.WhereIsit,atmydesk,Icanseesomethingsthatalawstudentmightnotsee:

Iaminvolvedinandunderstandtheengrossingofamendmentsintobills,mygraspofparliamentarypracticeissound,Ihaveadeeprespectforthenecessityofpreservingofficialdocumentsandrecords,Ihavedirectexperienceworkingwithothersinanofficesetting.Butthesequalitiesdonotgivemeacompleteviewofhowlawworks.IcanseehowabillisperfectedovertimeandIcanevaluatetheargumentsofthosewhohaveinterestinthebill,butIcannotintimatelyunderstandhowthestatuteenactedinthebillmightimpacttherealworld.Suchunderstandingisvitalifoneistoevenconsiderdraftingabill.Repeatedly,theRepresentativeswhoimpressmewiththeirgraspoftheeffectsandconsequencesofnewlaws（orchangestolaws）arethosewhoareattorneysorwhohavestudiedlaw.Yes,aRepresentativewhoisafarmerislikelytounderstandtheeffectsofabillrelatingtoagriculture;

however,aRepresentativewhoisanattorneyhasabroaderpicturthanothers,becauseheorshehashaddirectinteractionwiththelawspreviousLegislatureshaveenacted.Iseekabroadphilosophicalunderstandingofhowlawsinteractwithoneanotherandhow,throughtheirinterpretationincourts,

governasociety.

IamapplyingforadmissiontotheFloridaStateUniversityCollegeofLawinordertogaintheformaltrainingrequiredtopracticelawinthestateofFloridaintheserviceofthepublic.Ibelievemybackgroundandexperiencesmakemeacompetitivecandidate,particularlywhencomparedtomorerecentcollegegraduates.Myworkexperiencehasgivenmeasolidfoundationuponwhichtobuild.Iamintimatelyacquaintedwithlonghoursanddifficultwork;

legislativesessionsarequitedemanding,oftenrequiringthatIworkmany16-hourdaysconsecutively.Ihaveachievedahighlevelofpersonalconfidencebyproducingqualityworkonaconsistentbasisandhavedevelopedthematurityandfocusrequiredofasuccessfulfirst-yearlawstudent.Additionally,myexperienceinwriting,editing,andmanagingtheproductionofpublicationshascausedmetovaluepreciselanguageasaneffectivecommunicationtool.Iurgeyoutotaketheseuniquequalitiesintoconsiderationwhendeterminingthemakeupofyour2009first-yearclass.
