  Brennersaidthatifcarbondioxideplayedthemajorroleindeterminingplantcomposition,onewouldassumethatanalysisofthesedimentswouldrevealverysimilarchangesinrelativeabundanceofC3andC4plantsinthetwoplacesoverthestudyperiod.But,infact,theresearchersfoundthattrendsinthetwotypesofplantsweredifferentatthetwolocations.Thechangeswererelatednotwithcarbondioxidelevels,butwithshiftsinrainfall.“Theresultappearstobethatclimatefactors,especiallymoistureavailability,determinewhetherC4orC3plantsdominateinanarea,notcarbondioxide,”Brennersaid.
